View Full Version : Revleft blocked from school network due to "racist and violent content"

During an idle moment at school today, I decided to browse revleft, only to find I could not access it because it apparently contains "racist and violent content." I was completely baffled that whoever decides what is "appropriate" for students to view could be this ignorant about the basics of leftist ideologies. Then again, I live in Canada's bible belt and even my History teacher has only a vague notion of the true definition of Communism (he said modern-day Russia was socialist). I'm considering contacting the schoolboard about their censorship policies, not just because of this, but because a number of gay rights blogs are also blocked.

Well, I mean don't be surprised, this is a board dedicated to discussing the violent, if necessary, overthrow of every government on Earth.

I know how you feel. Our high school blocks websites all the time. Even though I live in the bible belt of the US South, mysteriously this website is open to all. Figures that the Canadian's are more scared of communism then the U.S, as they have the most peaceful military/society, and thus are ripe for a communist revolution.:tt1:

Well my local library blocks it too as a 'racist/hate' site... maybe we're already having the revolution in my library (Torie, tell your history teacher that my library isn't socialist either please...)

I think its due to all those stormfront links in Anti-Fascism to be honest.

Red Future, you could be right about that. And i suppose this could be classified as a "violent" site, but I wonder how many other politically-oriented sites are NOT blocked.

Maybe its an umbrella blocker? It may just fall into a category which blocks a great deal of alternative sites. I would ask a teacher about it (assuming you are allowed to browse material unrelated to school on your computers).

Portable firefox + PuTTY = SSH tunnel your traffic out to a $server. If you can't run software off the USB - cut and paste it to the local C: drive. That usually lets the program execute.

This is how I rolled for my last two years of high school,.

Have you seen some of the subject matter discussed on this thread? it's really not for everyone, nor should it be.

Such as?

it's really not for everyone, nor should it be.

The working class does technically make up the majority of the population. If socialists can't even reach out to the majority of the population, then there is a problem.

The only racist content I usually see in here is that from the occasional troll (or the confused ramblings of some "legit" poster). As for violent, yeah - I can see that. So tell me, how is it a socialist/communist/anarchist revolution remains vile and undemocratic when capitalist countries the world over commit worse atrocities daily? I wonder how your school board would respond.

I don't think there are many people here strongly calling for violence either.

During the October Revolution itself, not that people actually died.

Compare that with the bourgeois French Revolution, which was much more bloody.

We are only saying that violence would most likely be necessary in a revolutionary situation, not that it is something to be glorified and praised intrinsically.

I, for one, generally do not like violence intrinsically.

It's not banned in my school. Our board is the vanguard for proletariat education.

Isn't the board system in L.A. rather corrupt? Or have I gotten my hands on bad sources?

I'll check if Revleft is blocked monday, but it reminds me of something. For my ethics class, I had to do a project on a new religious movement and the Raelians' site was blocked. I undertand that these guys are crazy..but I couldn't do my research and had to do it all at home..'twas frustrating.
Sorry for the small rant

I think Revolution Perfect is right.

I think firstly you should just contact the IT department and ask them how certain websites become blocked. I remember having this discussion back when I was in high school, and the network software the school ran just automatically downloads and runs a block list, blocking certain IPs and Ports. The software company compiles that list. So simply ask the IT department about it first before going on about censorship.

And this isn't discrimination.
