All of those games did. Funny thing about my Duke Nukem game. My friend sat on it and a huge chunk of it broke off but the game still worked! We played through the whole story mode and multiplayer and nothing was wrong with it. It didn't make any sense at all that game was indestructible!

I'm looking forward to Guild Wars 2 (which will probably suck) Duke Nukem Forever is going to be just like Serious Sam- it's going to suck. Battlefield 3 is going to suck. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, is going to suck. They're all going to suck. Also, Dead Island is going to suck.

I occasionally play Borderlands which I liked for a while. Way too short, not enough stuff to get involved with, no cool vehicles but the music was alright. The character development sucked.

Actually the reason for my pessimism right now is because I don't want to play video games, I want to drink and read.

I"m thinking about Guild Wars 2. I played teh first one and enjoyed, but I don't think I have the time to waste on any more mmos. I don't think Skyrim will suck though. The gameplay footage was quite impressive. Just hope the game is good beyond just the combat.

Nice to know where Duke Nukem got his line from.

That movie, They live, is from 1988, three years before the first Duke Nukem got out.

That movie is sexy. Nothing like some reptoids.

As for DNF, it's obviously not the best game ever, but it's not really the sort of game that is "good", it's just.. amusing. Like the first one. One can't take such absurd shite too seriously. I'm kind of turned off by all the chicks everywhere however. I guess they want to market it to horny youth.

Except for its aliens that prop up the bourgeoisie and the bourgeoisie really has no power and that the aliens are actually masking themselves as humans through an all powerful transmitter based conveniently in a US major city.

also, shit 80s gun fighting.

other than that, it was an enjoyable movie.

i probably would have tried to kick the guys ass for being a crazy too.

No the bourgeoisie are the aliens the humans who are with them are kind of compradors. The sun glasses represent class conciousness and once you see beyond the lies and propaganda the only two options are to join them or rebel. The 6 minute fight scene is because the lead actor was a WWF wrestler, no other reason than that. Although I have wondered if it's significant that it's a white guy fighting a black guy and they only manage to get shit done when they stop fighting each other and start fighting the system.

the fight scene was just really poorly set up and resolved.

i mean, class is definitely represented in the movie, i just think it was a bit too "romantic" not in an intimate feel. but like, exaggerated.

months ago, someone described it as a blanquist movie. which, i think may be dead on. i mean, a dedicated small group of terrorists who only know how to see the real problems of society end up, after all kinds of violence, single handedly overthrowing the system without any mass movement or support.

Manic Impressive
12th June 2011, 23:03
lol I've never looked at it like that and I can see the view that it's blanquist. But they're not fighting to take control for themselves they're fighting to destroy the means by which the aliens/ruling class control society. So the plan is to create the circumstances for revolution by the oppressed to be possible. I think it makes the point that the bourgeoisie have no power other than what we give them.
As a film it is very very silly and the acting is atrocious, "Rowdy" Roddy Pipers performance is at least so bad it's funny but the female lead is just painful to watch.

Well yeaaah, on the surface, but I think it's a metaphor. Carpenter is left-wing, but he's a sci-fi/horror film-maker, and those guys never go right out and say what they're going to say. I like to think of the whole alien conspiracy as essentially being a metaphor for how capitalism and the bourgeoisie is an alien, inhuman force, and the process of "putting on the sunglasses" is representative of achieving consciousness and waking up as a worker.

That's my perspective, anyhow. In any case, I love Keith David's exposition in the beginning about how much bullshit capitalism is.

I'm kinda just a big fan of John Carpenter in general. If you don't mind cheesy '80s effects, Prince of Darkness is also really cool. And The Thing is just fucking genius.

ill check em out.

and yeah. i understand that its a metaphor. i just cant get over the 80s style film making.

i mean. i am pretty anti-80s. most of the music sucked and only some comedies from then survived. they Live is definitely a survivor though.

The story it was based on, "Nada," isn't. I would even say that the source material is explicitly anti-communist. There's really nothing in the source material about anti-consumerism, as the aliens' primary message is for humans to keep working and reproducing.

Note the prominence of yellows and reds, and note the faux-cyrillic mirroring of letters in the second panel. The aliens whom the main character massacres are also colored red.

The original story is called "Eight 'O Clock in the Morning"; I don't remember if that one had an anti-communist tint to it, however.
This comic Nada is a direct adaptation of 8 'o clock. Naturally so, since Ray Nelson was also the guy who wrote the comic. Compare the first panel to this excerpt:

At intervals along the street George saw the posters hanging with photographs of the Fascinators' multiple eyes and various commands printed under them, such as, "Work eight hours, play eight hours, sleept eight hours," and "Marry and Reproduce." A TV set in the window of a store caught George's eye, but he looked away in the nick of time. When he didn't look at the Fascinator in the screen, he could resist the command, "Stay tuned to this station."

George lived alone in a little sleeping room, and as soon as he got home, the first thing he did was to disconnect the TV set. In other rooms he could hear the TV sets of his neighbors, though. Most of the time the voices were human, but now and then he heard the arrogant, strangely bird-like croaks of the aliens. "Obey the government," said one croak. "We are the government, " said another. "We are your friends, you'd do anything for a friend, wouldn't you?"

"Obey!"

"Work!"

Suddenly the phone rang.

George picked it up. It was one of the Fascinators.

"Hello," it squawked. "This is your control, Chief of Police Robinson. You are an old man, George Nada. Tomorrow morning at eight o'clock, your heart will stop. Please repeat."

But the aliens are green, not red like in the comic. There is what would seem like a slight anti-government bent to it, but from the very short story that it is, I don't think it's very clear what the political views of the author might be. The comic has red aliens which makes it seem more like a comparison to communists. On that note, do you know what the Ray Nelson character's political views are? Wiki said something about meeting Sartre and going to Paris like one of those romanticising hippie-kinds.
