View Full Version : An Anarchist Axiom

A few years ago, 5 to be exact, someone told me an axiom that I thought was rather clever.

"There is no situation that is improved by the involvement of the police."

In the intervening years however, I found a flaw in this.

There is one situation that is improved by the involvement of the police.

Traffic.

Lane closures. Accidents. Detours. Etc. etc. etc.

So even in a post revolutionary society, we are going to need traffic wardens.

This must mean motorized vehicles are contrarevolutionary.

You have realised the truth. All power to the Revolutionary Traffic Wardens! Against the Bourgeois-Aristocratic motor vehicles!

Assuming, of course, that in a "post-revolutionary" society we'll have to drive around like crazy as we do in this insane capitalist-ruled society.

Maybe we'll be able to dispense with autos altogether by reorganizing our workplaces and work habits to be closer to our communities say, within walking or biking distance.

Also, in a sane society people won't have to work as much so that we can spend more time doing things that don't include driving and congesting the thoroughfares.

It's true, though, that in present-day society about the only halfway-useful thing cops do is manage vehicular traffic, but in my experience they manage it much like a case of domestic violence.

Current traffic laws and regulatory devices are only necessary now because society is so adapted to them. There is no reason why "police" have to regulate traffic nor is there any reason why "police" aka the state have to regulate anything. Believe it or not this is a major concern of statists in regards to anarchism. Classic state-of-the-gaps argument.
