You're gonna have to start as low man on the totem poll. In my experience, the easiest bar jobs to get are either barbacking or security. Although, for the latter you have to either be built like a brick shithouse or be handy with those dukes aka know some martial arts/boxing. Trying to go straight to bartending is like trying to ice skate uphill. It can be done, but it's damned difficult. You're gonna wanna ring 'round the place during the daytime. These people are busy at night, so going in then looking for a job is just going to make you look like a doofus. Also, try not to have a beer in your hand while you're filling out the application.

Everybody knows somebody who works at a bar, get that person to show you how everything works if possible. My mum works in a pub so when was 18 or 19 I got my mum to show me how to do everything. Applied for a job at a Wetherspoons and on my application I wrote I'd done "a couple of shifts" at different pubs, and got the job. It's horrible work imo and the money is generally awful. Last time I worked behind a bar I only stayed there a few months because I hated it and got offered a job where I work now which was better money/work/hours/location/everything and just an all round more likeable job. You would do well to look for vacancies at small places where people you know drink, otherwise it's just boring. Most importantly DO NOT get a job at Spoons, shit will make you want to kill yourself.
Or, as praxis suggested, start at the bottom. Look for glass collecting jobs.

I used to work at a bar but I had connections. Legally I don't think I was allowed to considering I was a teen. But yeah, just get connections.

LOL! To be clear I wasn't a bartender, like I didn't make drinks. Once in a great while the bartender let me serve someone a beer but that was it.

If you don't have experience, just tell them you have experience working in shops and at mcdonalds, and say that you're eager to learn and you're a hard worker.
Oh, and try lots of places, there's always some place that suddenly has a staff shortage.

What do you want to do at the bar? Try getting a server position, then it's easier to become a bartender or barback.

get a job at a restaurant as a busboy or something. a lot of sit down places have bars that you can work your way up to and then after soem time doing that you can get a job at a bar.

Sounds like you're trying to work at a club, that shot is really tough without experience. I'd try for a server (waiter) position or barback position at a pub or restaurant with a bar, get some bar experience there and then try for a club.
Clubs and busier bars never hire people without experience cause they're so busy and don't have time to train you on how to make drinks and shit.

Yeah it all depends on what type of place you're trying to get hired at. Go to a resteraunt with a bar or a country club whatever and get a job there first as busboy or cashier. There are usually times of the year that they need all the help they can get, like the place I worked at was super busy during biker week so they would hire anyone who wanted to help(hence how I got a job). Afterwards the people are really grateful that you helped out that when they need a person because someone called in sick or something they will call you up.

The kind that doesn't have you in it. ;)
Seriously, though. You're trying to start at the top of the food chain it sounds... Not only is there a working hierarchy inside every bar with the bartender at the top and the busboy at the bottom, but there's a hierarchy amongst bars as well.
Look at it this way, in football, most people aren't good enough to start their career in the Prem. Most people, if they ever make it to the Prem, start out in one of the lower leagues and prove themselves down there first.

This is the same problem had when I was trying to land bar work. I found other work, so it doesn't bother me.
What kind of qualifications od you need where you live? In Aus you need to get accredited to serve alcohol before anything else. I got my certificate but still not enough. Have you considered bar courses, drink mixing classes, stuff like that? Having experience in hospitality helps in general I guess.
Nic.
