Recently some anarchists covered up some of the notorious and hated red light traffic cameras in New Orleans with black garbage bags and threw leaflets in the air nearby. They anonymously sent in the video below. We transcribed the text of the leaflet below because it is hard to read on the video. This follows an arson attack (http://anarchistnews.org/?q=node/12353) on a speed camera on Chartres St. last October, and angry comments (http://www.nola.com/crime/index.ssf/2010/03/red-light_cameras_face_legal_c.html) flooding NOLA.com after every traffic camera story. Cameras in Jefferson Parish have already been stopped (http://www.nola.com/politics/index.ssf/2010/01/red-light_cameras_stop_snappin.html), and hopefully New Orleans will be next!

EVER GET THE FEELING YOU'RE BEING WATCHED?
ALL THE FUCKING TIME.
Traffic cameras show the total contempt that the government has for people. A stack of tickets extorts payments from us. They threaten us with worse if we don't pay. And in the end surveillance doesn't make us any safer, it only illegalizes things that we were once capable of accomplishing with our own good judgment.
Well, we're fucking sick of being manipulated by the incredulous gaze of surveillance, so we're putting a bag over the watchful eye of this newest type of policing.
Against the gaze of the state! For self-determination!

Yeah and the fact that this was in New Orleans just adds to the possibility of them being so. The rhetoric also seems somewhat in line of what Regan would say.
On the other hand, you have them dressed in all black rather than 18th century wigs and revolutionary war costumes. The leaflets say that the government is extorting us and there is some anti-police rhetoric. And the NWO wasn't mentioned but then again leftism wasn't mentioned as well.
So I'm not sure what to call them.

some of these comments make for an epic face palm. Addressed as anarchists, posted on anarchistnews, and unsurprisingly anarchists are active in opposing cctv and shit. fucking hell people.

I hope they had a few garbage bags left over to clean up the leaflets they pointlessly threw all over the place. Other than that, good on em.

Well done. If there is one thing I hate its this intrusive police state and its CCTV.

certainly better than bricking a couple of windows where the cameras are made.

I think this is good. I don't really like some of the comments made here. Even if they are some Ron Paul libertarian types I say good for them. I agree with covering up CCTV cameras.

I agree, I mean take central London. There is apparently 1 camera for every 6 people - a frightening statistic. I've also heard that if you walk across that city there is always at least one camera on you.

Is that statistic for the tiny city of London or are there really several millions of CCTV surveillance cameras?

I don't think traffic cameras for identifying traffic violators are as much of a disturbing thing as general surveillance is.
