What can the run of the mill consumer do to avoid getting contaminated? Should cucumbers be washed? Should people avoid consuming uncooked vegetables?
What do YOU say?

So much for the cucumber diet I've enjoyed for several months now. :(

The funny "gras-root" islamophobe pro-israel right wing media in Germany says this comes from guest workers taking a dump on the farm. LOL!

Seems like cucumber was found innocent, the latest breakthrough resulted in blaming sprouts: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/jun/05/ecoli-beansprouts-identified-likely-source
Personally I agree with Mahmoud A., each year now we face almost certain doom anew because of some mysterious epidemic, it really gets lame. Didn't catch bird flu, didn't catch swine flu and I've been eating cucumber and sprouts but didn't catch this E coli stuff so far. If I catch it and die because of it you can all have a good laugh at me but meh.

That's not even the worst they come up with. Claming that irresponsible, dirty foreigners contaminate our vegetables because of their barbaric ways imported from countries without toilets but backward Islamic tiolet etiquette isn't enough for the real xenophobe, no sir. Instead the most extreme insist that this is a bioterrorist attack - launched of course by dirty, German-hating backward Muslims.

It previously appeared in Korea in 1994 though in a limited outbreak, so it's not really all that new either.

Looks like Ethiopia is safer than Britain with regards to E.Coli at the moment. Better be safe, see you guys.

Definitely wash the cucumber after using it as a sex toy to avoid the e coli.

So my friend is convinced the strain was genetically bio-engineered in a lab to maximize human casualties, due to it being immune to like 8 different anti-biotics.
Needless to say, the tinfoil-hattery is in full order.

The thing is, this could actually have turned out to be the case, because the sort of farm that hires guest workers in the first place does not strike as the kind of place to invest in adequate toilet facilities, like a porta-potty.
So despite the right-wing anti-immigrant spin, if anyone is at fault in such a situation it would be the farm owners!

Generally, cooking your food at a high enough temperature and for long enough should kill e. coli but.... that's just common sense. Also, keep your food away from poop.

Dying in an air crash would be pretty cool (like winning the lottery) but I'd rather not die from bacteria. That's so 1895.
