Let's talk some Skyrim.
Alright, remember how oblivion was so dynamic, so smooth and stuff? Acrobatics, running, ect...
Then fallout came, where you fealt like a heavy douche who ran .00000000001 miles and hour, walking took forever (It fucking sucked) and it was hard as fuck, not dynamic, repetitive (VAAATTSSSS), and made your thumbs hurt? (Btw, I love Fallout New Vegas, but nothing compared to oblivion)
I hope Skyrim isn't like that. What got me scared is that they said they took out speed as a skill, and acrobatics. That sucks. the whole game you will run just as fast, and jump just as high. In Oblivion, my guy was a badass who jumped 30 ft like a ninja/assassin.
Plus, combat looks a lot harder.
I hope it doesn't become like fallout.... (Walking is a pain in the ass).
Skryim.... Might just suck... A lot
(Btw, I am not hating on fallout, but for the TES series i have much higher standards, man)

I hated the fact in Oblivion you had to enter towns though the main gates, it was annoying as fuck if you were playing a thief or assassin type character because if you had a bounty on your head you had to get it removed or you couldn't enter towns and i know there are mods to fix it but i had to play it on the consol for 4 years because i didn't have a computer powerful enough to play it. My hope is to have the sneaking and acrobatics of Oblivion, the non-instanced towns from Morrowind, and the climbing skill from Daggerfall. One of my fondest memories from Morrowind was making my way to the Thieves Guild with a bounty on my head by running along the the outer-wall of Balmora, it felt sneaky.

But you can fix that issue with the Oblivion open cities mod.

The only thing I didn't much care for with Oblivion was the omnipotence of the guards hive mind. You could kill a Legion forester in the middle of nowhere, and everyone in every town suddenly was aware of your crime. Oh, and the loading times were absolutely terrible.
Overall though, these minor things were a small price to pay for the tremendous immersion of Oblivion. I don't know how best to put it, but I never really cared for my characters in fallout, whereas in Oblivion I really felt more involved in the course of the game. I only hope that Skyrim will be able to replicate that same degree of player engagement.

they took out speed and acrobatics!? I could run across Cyrodil on foot faster than on a horse and jump across entire buildings. Still looking forward to it but come on.
Rusty Shackleford
3rd June 2011, 00:05
speed and acrobatics. they were fucking pointless skills! i only used them to buffer my level so i could get the level bonuses. yeah you can jump high but that could be modified by strength or something. even then, i dont care for the loss.
remember in morrowind where you would just jump everywhere? yeah, thats what was dumb.
also, New Vegas is pretty good, it is the end of that engine though. they need a new one but this one is apparently a refurbished and reworked version of the Oblivion engine. they said it resolved many issues though.
also, the terrain is totally hand made in this one. and there are 8 cave designers.

I thought Oblivion gates were fun, one of the best parts! But a pain in the ass at the same time. Also in Morrowind now THOSE loading times were horrible and you could levitate anywhere! Gotta admit it was fun though and needed without fast travel. Guard hive mind thing needs to go.

Fuck fast travel. It destroys immersion.I want Silt striders or what they're called and Mark/Recall, not magical teleportation and time travel.
The oblivion map was huge and it was condensed to shit with the implementation of fast travel.

The problem with Oblivion is that the levelling system was absolutely shit, and the fact that if you didn't level properly you could be attacked by a rat or a goblin and be given a run for your money. The second major problem was the ridiculous story line which saw you liberate what seemed like an endless number of gates. None of which were any more difficult than killing a nest of goblins at any point in the game (thank you shit levelling system).
Boring.
Fallout 3 was a vastly better game.

Nordic Mythology is great so long as you dont take it too far and turn into a Nazi. its fucking epic. And this game, though not REAL mythology, is heavily influenced by it and does a great job blending it with the elder scrolls game and its own mythology they created over the past almost 2 decades.

No, you weren't and no it isn't. Oblivion is easily the most over-rated game I have ever played. It is at best a mediocre game substandard to even the third Gothic installement, which wasn't great either.
Let's just run through the three main aspects, as far as I am concerned:
Game play: Oblivion was, in terms of combat game play was actually inferior to the indie installement Mount and Blade, which was made by two people from their living room on a shoe-sting budget gathered by selling at tiny prices early verions of the game. I got Mount and Blade years ago back when it was in version 0.3, and even then it was vastly suprior in terms of game play to Oblivion and had a far more sinsible levelling system.
Graphics: Ok. They were pretty good, but no more so than should be expected. In fact Morrowind, as I recall, looked better for its time than oblivion. And Fallout 3, which is admittedly a few years younger, makes Oblivion look positively ugly.
Story: What a load of crap. While there was lots of exploring to do the central storyline was impossibly bad. The fact that the developers added all those fucking oblivion gates to artifically extend the play time was nothing short of false advertising and soon turned Oblivion into one of the most boring RPGs I have ever played.
So I really fail to see why Oblivion is a banging game. Every installement of the Elder Scroll's series was and remains a more enjoyable game. Seriously, get Dosbox and play Arena, if you think that Oblivion was a banging game Arena will blow your mind. And that game came out in 1994.

All these types of games are going to have that shit from now on. There's way more money to be made in pandering to "casual players" - people who don't want to spend three hours looking for the right door or whatever - than in pandering to "gamers" - people who do. That's cool with me - I like that the newer Rockstar games have the GPS and the "restart from checkpoint" shit.

ANYWAY, seems that the dragons are totally unscripted (hell yea) but they're going to be using the leveling system of FO3, which is terrible. Also they got rid of some skills, presumably to be replaced by others (judging by the dual wielding).
What makes me nervous is this talk of "not having to select a characters/etc, and just playing the way you want to play". I hated how the specialization and general RPG features of Morrowind were dumbed down. In Oblivion you could basically do whatever you wanted, and that sucked. You're not supposed to be able to do that. You should have to, I don't know, develop your fucking character a little bit and specialize. I fear that it's going to be like Oblivion's magic but worse (as in, if you did magic you could basically do anything from any role, probably better than if you had specialized). If they make the character progression/rpg elements too open it's going to further break the game. I don't like feeling like superman while playing a game, that's why I liked Morrowind. You could be running along, not a care in the world, then WHAM, a fucking level 60 shemp comes out and pwns the fuck out of you. That added something.

Nonononononono. NO.
It's not a question of "hardcore" or some dumb shit like that. It's about the actual form of the quests.
FUCKIN EXAMPLE:
(With Quest Arrow)
QuestGiver: O hai, find this person and kill them, I won't tell you where they are or anything, but do it.
You: Ok, don't worry about not telling me where they are, because I already know there exact location and current velocity for some reason.
QuestGiver: O good, cuz if you didn't know that, you may have to, like, explore this world or some shit, laaame.
So you see, you can't even solve these quest arrow quests without the quest arrow, because they require them.

I always thought that was kind of the charm of Morrowind: "You have to kill some fucker in his yurt on the windswept Azura's Coast. It's approximately south-east of <city>, so go there and ask for any rumours about his location."
And then you just have to travel from A to B. The place may or may not be reachable by transport, and probably only from a few other towns. If it isn't, then that's tough titties and you'll just have to walk and find your way. No arrow and no fucking instant travel (except for the Interventions, which don't let you go wherever you want, and Mark/Recall, which only allows you to mark one place at a time).
It doesn't so much have to do with "casual vs hardcore" as it does with whether you want to play a role playing game or a kind of interactive fantasy film. In the former, it makes sense that quick travel is crippled by the aforementioned restrictions. You're not just teleporting from one place to another, but you're actually taking the boat somewhere. The latter variety is just as much fun.

Except a god deal of the storylines can't be fast-travelled either ;) - The most out of the way Daedra shrines inspired a lot of "how did the fuckers get there", the dark brotherhood (it should so have been expanded) had some of its victims in the middle of nowhere, and most of Shivering Isles can't be fast travelled until about halfway through - that said I still feel like I want more SI, less Oblivion.

Couldn't really be arsed with Morrowind, but I got it in like 2006 and I thought it didnt really look that awesome anymore. Fallout 3 is one of the best games I ever played and I tried Oblivion next but that was boring crap. Busy with Fallout New Vegas now but I gave it a rest.

Shut the Fuck up everyone of you. Morroblivion is where they take all of Morrowind and put it into oblivion, so your oblivion character could explore ALL of morrowind and do ALL of the Morrowind quests with ALL The morrowind items.
Look it up..... This is NOT a mod for morrwind.

sometimes i only have like 30 min to play before i goto work and i'd prefer to spend it doing the quest instead of jogging around in circles trying to find a door in the middle of a lava field
and you have to find the location to fast travel to it anyway in oblivion so...

I don't have an issue with a fast-travel kind of system when it makes sense. Oblivion I did not like the fast-travel at all. In Morrowind it was just fast-travel between cities and it cost money. It made sense to me and kept the immersion at a high. I think I read Skyrim is introducing a kind of system like this coupled with Oblivion style fast-travel.

One thing that I always found interesting about Oblivion is that, at least from what I can remember, all the things that we laugh about now were heavily hyped. The gaming press felt that the levelled enemies, the persuasion system, fast travel and the arrow were all brilliant features. The backlash only came later on.

whats funny is i never got caught up in the hype for TES IV or III. i actually first even touched the game probably a year before TES IV was announced and i didnt want to touch it with a 10 foot pole. a year later i decided to give it a shot because i had no other games. i wasnt aware of a new one coming out and i only just heard of the 360.
i got into it. WAY INTO IT.
then i played oblivion at my friends house and was like oh shit. it was definitely different feeling. i dont remember how i felt though.
same with Fable. i played it for the first time maybe a year after it came out and LOVED IT. i didnt know anything about what it was hyped up to be.

Fallout 3's environment was repetitive, shitty, and frustrating to travel. All the towns sucked, and it got boring as hell.
Yeah, the gameplay was fucking awesome, like weapons, monsters and VATS but the city was asssssssss.
New Vegas, on the otherjand, had both a fucking epic gameplay system AND kickass environment.
Never played the old versions, but we.
But one question: Umad?

Odd considering there is only one in the game. Anyways while this thread is up might as well ask here too. There is this part in Morrowind that I cannot get passed. It's in the Bloodmoon expansion with the East Empire Company quests, the Spriggan one. I am trying to kill those four and have looked everywhere but I have only found a few. I entire turned werewolf and killed every one I found on the island! Still nothing. Any tips? Unel keeps saying the Spriggans are still out there.

What exactly is the problem? Are you worried that a new card would consume more power than your PSU can provide? If so you need a website like this:
http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp
Tell us what your rig is. If you aren't sure install everest home edition:

This so much. I started to hate Bethsoft after Oblivion, which was garbage with stupid, cheap and LCD writing, mostly bad and repetitive quests and clunky and technically outdated engine. Then became Fallout 3. Oh boy. That sucked. [Intelligence] So you fight the good fight with your words? Writers had no clue there.
Fallout: New Vegas was vastly better, even if it had some severe flaws. It was Fallout game. Can't say that about FO3.

I got it for the ps3, and i know how to use magic. I don't know how to enchant stuff, use soul stones, or understand quite how to gain more actual magicka (I have a pitifully low amount that keeps me with very few usable spells.) It kinda sucks because one of my major traits or abilities or what not is Destruction and I only have like 28 destruction because the only destruction spell I know and have enough magicka to cast is flare, which is useless.

To enchant things, you know those sigil stones from oblivion gates? Click on them and choose what you want to enchat, then name it (I have an axe that does ice damage and I named it "Icepick that killed Trotsky")
Or, if you're high up in the mages guild, you can go to an enchantment place and make your own enchantments. Soul Gems need souls, once you have those, you can use them to recharge your weapons .

anyway it think i will customize my class like this;
Major skills:
Acrobatics/Athletics (since they will be merged)
Marksmanship (love archery)
Sneak (awesome stealth, plus sneak attack 3x critical bonus at journeyman, and disregards armor at master)
Security (fuck private property)
Alchemy (stat boost, arrow poisoning)
Hand to Hand (knocking motherfuckers out when they get close, drain fatigue, then run again to arrowspam)
this way i can just focus on speed, agility and luck (main attributes). maybe some intelligence for minor spells/alchemy, and a little bit of strength for carrying/hand to hand. But carrying weigth is overrated, so ill just make a shitload of feather potions. I want to use Hand to Hand for knocking out mainly.
i will put light armor in minor because i dont plan to get hit that much, so i wont level that quick when i put it major.
Will probably play as Khajiit again, love the Nighteye and eye of fear, plus the agility bonus. And i guess i will take the equivillent of the Shadow birthsign (i dont know how it will work with those stones in Skyrim though). ill start of with the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild missions, because they give you the best agillity and speed bonuses and gear.

Then that changes things. On one hand I hate PC games and play my 360 a hell of a lot more but on the other hand Elder Scrolls games are pretty damn buggy (mostly Morrowind) but even Oblivion I can't keep doing quests for that dark elf witch in SI because she won't leave the house plus on PC the mods are great. idk which.

It's highly doubtful mods will be allowed on the console. Sony and Microsoft haven't shown indications of allowing it in other games- at least to the scale that we saw in the Morrowind and Oblivion modding scene.
Then again it might take a while for the modding scene to "kick off" so to speak, so if one really wanted to play it they could get it on the console first, and later when it comes down in price get it on PC (or through other methods, *cough* torrent *cough*) and jump into all the mods that will be made then.
The game is going to be demoed today at the PAX (Penny Arcade Expo), so we'll be getting some information from that. One odd thing I learned recently in the past week is that they'll be giving the feature for players to "marry" an NPC (lolwut)- regardless of gender or race too. One of the Beth guys has confirmed that it'll allow same-sex marriage too, stating in two tweets "Not hush hush, just not making a huge deal out of it. You can marry anyone." and "... not any NPC, [I] just mean any male or female. Doesn't matter what you're playing"
Gee, I can see the conservatives going nuts about that, considering this'll be no doubt a big seller on the consoles.

Yes, that's what I mentioned in my last post. "Marriage" is possible with any NPC in the game given that it's either "male" or "female".

It's no big deal. I think it's a good thing anyways to leave these options open to the player in what way they want to play.
Of course the "gay agenda" folk will be out in storm over this.

Woot i got skyrim pre-ordered! I'm super stoked, i swear this game will consume my life. When i played oblivion i lost my job and girlfriend. (the job was kinda getting rid of me cause i had school and couldn't work their hours they wanted me to). Then the girlfriend got mad because i was busy being a vampire trying to find my way to becoming normal again. Let's hope this doesn't happen with skyrim! ;)

Holy shit. May not even bother upgrading my pc if this is true. Since Deus Ex won't be supporting mods I'm seeing less and less reason to throw another $450 into my pc for just another few years. If the mod compatibility is limited then fuck it. I honestly don't see there being decent compatibility for mods between the console and pc. If there is serious mod compatibility I might be on the verge of saying goodbye to my years of hardcore pc gaming. As much as I prefer the pc, it is expensive as fucking hell to keep up with the shit being released.
Well, you don't have to keep up with what is being released. You can stay a few years behind, and spend relatively small sums and still be able to play most, if not all, new games.
I, for example, need to upgrade the amount of RAM I have, this will cost me no more than £15, and I'll be able to play skyrim on my piece of shit ragtag rig.
