I've always heard that Allende was the first elected Marxist in Latin America. Who was the first in the world?

Edit: First democratically elected President

Wilhelm Leibknecht, maybe? He was elected to the Reichstag around 1870.

August Bebel was first elected to the Reichstag in 1867, although the OP specifically mentions a president, so I think that might not be exactly what they're looking for.

Indian Marxists got elected to state government. I understand they were the first (fairly) democratically elected Leninist governments.

... the OP specifically mentions a president...

Not when I posted my answer, they didn't, the question was edited and clarified 3 minutes after I posted my answer.

I forget about Bebel sometimes.

I'm not aware there's ever been a 'democratically elected Marxist president' of anything.

The first democratically elected Marxist "President" in the world should also be the last.
