We are awfully sorry folks. The Memorial is temporarilly closed because we have to safe you from dangerous terroists who might have exposed you to merryment, love and affection. We can not have this in our country.

There's a dance party occurring there on Saturday to protest the law and the arrests.
If I were an American around that area I would show up.

Sure...hell...expressing some merryment and kissing and dancing are such vile behaviours that we need to stomp it out. Because you know...the statue is really going to mind...and other people might take offence.
This is oppression...its the next step. Well on the road to bonapartism and eventually fascism.

You're exaggerating more than a little. First, this is not arbitrary abuse of the park service's power (fascism, obviously), but came from an appeals court ruling. It's not protected expression because they were creating a spectacle inside the small enclosed space of the memorial, and they didn't have a permit to do it. I expect the parks service would do the same if an individual was screaming at other patrons or throwing trash around the place.
The dancers also look really stupid and embarrassing.
MattShizzle

So because the court supported fascism it's OK? Wake up, US courts for the most part are very anti-freedom, anti-worker and pro-fascism.

Riiight...they were protesting the court ruling based on a previous case of a woman dancing to celebrate TJs birthday back in 2008. Jefferson...the man who once said: I am opposed to any form of tyranny over the mind of man.
Terribly ironic...that in the `shrine` to the burgeoisie man who opposed oppression on freedom of expression and speech...those exact same liberties he held very high are violated and repressed.
The court ruling btw stated that dancing violated the contemplative nature of the monuments and was therefore forebidden.
That court ruling is a farce.
Lets not equate the movements that they made with screaming and throwing around trash.
Any ways...most demonstrations by leftists are declared illegal by courts. Lets not hide behind laws to say something is not repression or should be respected based on that fact.

And yet somehow fitting: as the bourgeois republic has transformed from being a progressive, emancipatory force to a reactionary, oppressive one, so its monuments transform from being celebrations of emancipation to being locations of oppression. It may not be what Jefferson wanted, but its the natural historical conclusion of the state he constructed. Arbitrarily state violence being meted out at Jefferson's feet can be taken as a slight upon his ideals, yes, but can it not also be taken as a blunt illustration of the fact that dead old white guys and their enchanted parchment aren't going to save us now? ;)

MattShizzle
30th May 2011, 04:08
As has been posted by others - this clearly is abuse of power and a ruling by corrupt courts. Requiring a permit in order to protest is an extremely reactionary thing and only used in order to limit protest to what the borguiose agree with. The 1st ammendment wasn't written in order to only allow certain speech at certain times in certain places if the exploiter class is OK with it.
Of course idiots still like to say the US is the most free country in the world which is utter bullshit.
BTW if China or Cuba or N Korea arrested people simply for dancing at a national monument what do you think the reaction of the Western press would be? Has this story been covered in the Western press at all? What does that say?

This is America - nothing more, nothing less. Police brutality is not uncommon. What really bothers me is the amount of bystanders who merely stood there while it happened. Instead of publicly defying these guys, the people just filmed what happened. It worries me, as it reminds me that we're becoming increasingly detached from the events that surround us. I just wish more people had resisted...

While it would be in poor taste to dance at a funeral, I think the real question is: Should the state determine where one can or cannot dance?
If a family finds it distasteful, I think a simple "hey, would you mind stop dancing?" would do, I hardly see the need to have armed men intervene in these matters.

What about ritual dances to guide spirits into the afterlife?
I agree with the poster above: the state has no business telling you where dancing is legal/illegal.

If it was appropriate, sure, why not?
Some people just make up arguments like this, ignorant of the fact that people have a little thing called Common Sense. Most people have it, but there are times when people ignore it, and try making arguments like such.
It's best to just ignore them, or say most people use Common Sense in their life.
