View Full Version : Does Lil Wayne have talent?
Property Is Robbery

He has been brought up in several threads. Usually only by bailey187. What do you all think?
Is Lil Wayne a talented artist, or just the current trend who will eventually fade away?

That would be interesting but I want to know how many people actually think he makes good music.

Little Wayne has written some of the worst rap in its history. I mean its just honestly terrible. I question how people can even bear to listen to the man. His lyrics are especially horrible (but hey no one listens to lyrics nowadays anyway). So no, Little Wayne just isn't good. I mean at least some of the other new rap stars are good these days but Little Wayne is just the apex of everything wrong with rap.
Does this really need a debate?

To say Lil Wayne is the epitome of what's wrong with hip-hop obviosuly doesn't know what's wrong with hip-hop and it shows that you're all moronic hipsters. I can honestly say that almost everyone on this forum may not have bad taste ih music but a shit perspective on music especially hip-hop. As far as music goes, you all suck.

Yes he has talent but he is also flavour of the month. Lots of talented artists fade away, the labels and radio stations who "decide" what the next big thing is going to be don't care whether or not Wayne has talent. He doesn't deserve to fade away but still might through no fault of his own.

I think he has talent, and you can't go by two or three songs and say he doesn't. He comes up with his raps of the top of his head. If you've ever heard the song Georgia Bush, you would know that he can also rap about social/political problems like Katrina, BP and problems like that. Not only are some of his lyrics metaphorically awesome, the beats that he uses in his music make it hard not to dance to.
He's not my favorite rapper, but I would not say he doesn't have talent because he's been rappin and making a scene around here since he was like 13 or some shit.

I would rather listen to like Wale or Immortal Technique though.

Yes blaming Katrina on Bush is really deep.

All that shit about him being sexist in his lyrics. Tupac talked about *****es, but that is how they use their slang. Tupac also talked about very important issues like crack, black panthers and huey newton, growing up in ghettos, rapping about women keeping their heads up when they are abused and all sorts of issues like that. So, did Tupac have any talent whatsoever?

Great example of a hipster who really has no understanding of hip-hop but is trying to themselves on the high horse. Rap never meant resistance to oppression, it meant hyper-masculine music artists pumping their chests just like heavy metal. Destruction of people through violence and drugs? LOL, someone doesn't know how to take in art.

I'm not a fucking hipster. The thing that killed hip hop was the commercialization and glorification of the violence that plagued the inner cities in the late 1980s as a result of the crack boom. Before, hip-hop was an extremely creative, progressive movement. Now, we've got people "rapping" about fake gold teeth, murdering other proles, dealing drugs to the poor, and misogyny.

It doesn't need always need to be overt like Spinal Tap but whether you listen to melodic metalcore like Killswitch Engage which is probably the least hyper-masculine form of heavy metal but still in all its whininess still relates to more male-oriented themes. And thrash metal despite being about dark political themes still involves some male chest pumping. I'm not insulting it for that, heavy metal is my second favorite genre but still very defined by its hyper-masculinity.

LOL I laughed when I saw this. I couldn't care less if anyone disagrees with me, but this guy is just in it for the money and fame. The funny thing is, from what I've heard, he actually loves the idea of capitalism, yet here we are wondering why he has fans if he's talentless. Does talking (not rapping) over a beat about money make someone talented? Tear a hole in my arse by trying to argue with me, I don't really care.
EDIT: He's a commie? How can a communist be so money obsessed? Just goes to show how much I avoid listening to him and anything to do with him. Are people calling him a communist purely because he had a shirt that said "communist" on it? The Sex Pistols wrote Anarchy in the UK, doesn't make them anarchists.

Nothing wrong with making money, he probably employs a couple of (very well paid) bodyguards and that's it. Everybody likes making money. Best day of the week for me is payday, I love going to the atm on Friday mornings and seeing how much I've been paid, then having breakfast in a really nice place before walking to work. Doesn't make me a bad Communist. I enjoy some of the pleasures that capitalism brings, it just happens that I recognise that Communism can bring most of those pleasures a lot more efficiently and with a lot less exploitation.

I'm not saying we can't enjoy money, but rubbing it in people's faces that you earn millions every year then wearing a shirt that says "communist" is a bit hypocritical to me. I thought most communists would agree that someone earning shit loads of money from doing hardly any work, but other people working their butts off to feed themselves is just a little bit unfair. I don't have a problem with people making money, I have a problem with people making way more money than they deserve. Music, a form of art, does not deserve the kind of pay he gets. Music comes from the heart, not from the bank.

Yeah I agree that it's wrong that he makes so much while others make so little, but I'm far less offended by a rapper flashing his money than I am a capitalist. Lil Wayne records songs by the truckload and has a mental touring schedule so at least he has earned some of his money. People enjoy his music, he makes them happy, I can think of a lot worse people to give money to.
Plus, Lil Wayne's music isn't even just about money.

I think that something does need to be done about the huge amounts of money attached to entertainment but that's just how it is under capitalism, famous entertainers have endless supplies of cash. Whatever, there are a lot more fucked up things to worry about, at least rappers do something positive for society unlike most millionaires.

Sure, he makes people "happy" with his music. Although I strongly disagree with the way he goes about selling his music to people, that's a different matter. I'm not sure about you but personally music is a huge part of my life, so I just don't appreciate mainstream fame whores whose interests seem to be elsewhere than purely in the music. I'm hoping me and my band can get somewhere with our music, but not to the point where we make shit loads of money from being famous for our image and whatever else mainstream musicians are famous for. I want the attention to be on our instrumentals and the meaning behind our songs, not which magazine we've just done a front cover picture for or how cool our swagger is. I could go on all day about this but yeah, that's my view on the subject.

Music is a huge part of my life too, I play drums in two punk bands and do live Hip Hop beat sets every month at a pub. So we both make music, ok.....let tell you this, from the perspective of a musician: if I was given the opportunity to get paid to do music the same amount Lil Wayne does, I would take that opportunity without even needing to think about it. BUT, the music would come first, and - also from the perspective of a musician - I firmly believe Lil Wayne loves the music and it is just as huge part of his life as it is yours or mine, he was making music before anyone ever talked about paying him to do it. And just a bit of speculation here, I bet if he had never got signed he would be freestyling on a street corner somewhere. Your view on the subject is fair and I totally share it when it comes to some other artists but not Lil Wayne, I don't think you have listened to enough of his music to understand that it is NOT just about magazine covers or money or swagger. I used to have exactly the same perspective as you, until I actually got hold of some of his music other than the singles I had heard on the radio, that was when I came to the conclusion that he is an intelligent person who deserves the best success. As a Hip Hop fan, I like him, and I think he comes across as a pretty ok person too, which can't be said for many of today's Hip Hop artists

Yeah we've recorded eight tracks in total, five of which will be released as an EP (which will be a free download) when I finish mixing them. My other band is actually just a two piece and I don't think we'll ever record anything because most of what we do is improvisational, kind of free jazz meets punk. I intend to set up a soundcloud with recordings of my Hip Hop sets too sometime but one thing at a time I guess.

I usually hate Lil Wayne's voice, but yeah he's got some talent.
That's because he sounds like a 7 year old when he's talking.
I do think he has some talent and I do like some of his songs but he isn't the "greatest rapper alive," or anything. I've noticed that a lot of the YM crew have the same lyrical pattern though which makes all of their songs sound the same so unless it's an exceptional song besides this, then I usually don't dig it.

I'm starting to feel like lil Wayne is kinda last generation now. I mean nowadays hip-hop is all electro bangers like waka flocka or weed rock like wiz. Wayne is one of those artists that made it in the wannabe trapstar cycle together with Young Jeezy and Akon (via that one song) but nowadays being a hardcore crack dealer isn't really considered cool because moat people don't remember Don't Be A Menace in South Central or Boyz n the Hood so unless you're trying to capture the dumb teens market like Rick Ross, southern gangsta rap really isn't the way to go.

There is definitely a new wave going on Wayne aint a part of. He's still good though. John is a great song.
Really? I liked the beat a lot because I used to tell people how the acid melody in the background of old school beats sounds like the music in 50s B-movies and here they come right out and merge the two, but the song itself was really boring because it was one of those Rick Ross songs where he says the same hook like 10 times and some like 8-line verse. Kinda feel like Wayne will be confined to the Wayne+Ricky+T-Pain+3-5 other dudes DJ KHALED mixes now together with all the 2000s rappers who are quickly turning into nobodies.

True that the southern rappers of the 2000's have become irrelevant but that's just the cycle of music and I see Lil Wayne surviving for a while. The electro hop stuff didn't last long at all and quickly went away. The only distinct style of hip-hop that is popular now is alternative hip-hop, and that's a loose sub-genre. It's revitalized hip-hop out of its stagnation, you got stuff ranging from Kid Cudi to Odd Future.

I like Wayne's unique voice and fairly elaborate metaphors, but he's at the forefront of those who glorify money and material possessions.

Well when you consider how many people are illiterate or barely literate, is this such a surprise???
