From here. (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/25/world/americas/25briefs-Brazil.html?scp=2&sq=brazil&st=cse)

Brazil’s lower house of Congress overwhelmingly approved revisions to a key environmental law that would open up land in the Amazon rain forest (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/science/topics/forests_and_forestry/rain_forests/index.html?inline=nyt-classifier) for agriculture and grant amnesty to producers who deforested protected areas. The Senate still must vote on the measure, which conservationists say could accelerate the pace of deforestation.

yeah it's a tiny article but it should be a nice reminder to the people (in brazil and internationally) who have touted this country, and the other BRIC "miracles", as shining beacons of progress and economic growth (yeah but more 16 million of our population still lives in extreme misery).

The corporate system is based on short term profit. They'll make a shit load of cash real quick but before long there won't be any trees left to make into money... or provide oxygen.

Wasn't this bill actually pushed by the Communist Party to help poor farmers utilize more of their land if they live in the Amazon?

The chief architect of the bill, Aldo Rebelo of Brazil's Community Party, says the changes would most benefit poor farmers, although small-holder schemes in the past have been widely abused by barons who subdivide holdings and use peasants as proxies to control and grab land. Landowners who have less than 400 hectares won't be expected to reforest deforested areas. This looks like a commie pushing a pro-poor bill that will have a roundabout way of helping private capital in the process.

lol no the PCdoB is to communism as the US is to democracy. aldo rebelo is a sort of quirk in the brazilian political system: pretty much an old-school "INDUSTRIALIZE THE NATION BRO" latin american nationalist

ironically on the same day this was passed two activists in the amazon were killed by ranchers
