View Full Version : Against Self-Diagnosis

There should be a rule against self-declarations of mental illnesses on revleft as it neither contributes to the wellbeing of the self described victim, (flame wars over a very personal and sensitive matter) nor does it contribute to the understanding of the alleged illness or disorder. (flyby analysis with little accredited evidence)
For better or worse, these revlefters should seek professional help or at least counsel (friends, family) outside of revleft, and only in such a way could a real situation/condition have a chance at being remedied if at all.

1. Why S&E?
2. How could this possibly be enforced? Does an admin PM me after I announce that I'm bipolar and ADHD to verify that I have had a psychiatric diagnosis?
3. A lot of people don't have the option to seek professional help outside of the internet
4. I've encountered way too many bullshit diagnoses from professionals to entirely put my faith in the validity of their diagnostic processes

That would give far too much respect the mental health establishment.

Well here's my problem. I would too would like to take certain positions against psychology and psychiatry and challenge them on a discursive level. I too often encounter people who self diagnose using slip-shod definitions and prescriptions of these fields. As soon I challenge the basis of their self-diagnosis, they self identify with their "condition" and go to absurd lengths to justify the diagnosis. (sometimes with claims largely disinherited from within the field itself)
So as a pragmatic matter for the purposes of providing a ground for discursive dialogue, the two: educational/argumentative & personal/diagnosis should be separated! through a self imposed ethic, or reminder by moderators. Some of us are fifteen! things could get seriously messed up! is this common sense that is just missed out on by revlefters? do you share my concern?
i'm pretty confident in my dianosis

I think it would be an exercise in futility to prevent people from self-diagnosing Asperger's on the internet. It's probably a meme by now.

There are liability issues associated with giving medical advice (such as guessing a diagnosis) without a license to practice medicine.
It does not seem people are aware of this on the internet, and in particular on revleft.
Also for personal/privacy issues, people should keep medical information to themselves.
There are other places on the internet for people to discuss mental health issues, which are much less hostile than revleft can be.

if this is in response to the aspergers thread, you do realise that autistic spectrum neurologies arent mental illnesses right?
That would be an incredibly ignorant connection to make.

I am sure to ask my psychologist and neurologist for a note. Also...incidentally...could you provide any credentials in the field of Psychology or therapy seeing as you deem yourself fit to challenge the field and the disorders....especially since you use terms such as mental illness in a very generalised manner??

I've only seen trolling used to attack those feeling they may have a specific disorder/disease/illness/mental illness. I think the problem is in the trolling.

I've received a lot of decent feedback regarding illnesses/disorders etc.. and I've seen a lot of good advice given.
For better or worse, these revlefters should seek professional help or at least counsel (friends, family) outside of revleft, and only in such a way could a real situation/condition have a chance at being remedied if at all.
A lot of people don't have a lot of friends/family whom they feel comfortable talking with (or at all) - they converse through forums/email/letters and can get a lot of good advice. I have a few friends I'm comfortable sharing specifics with- I also feel comfortable sharing these specifics, at times, on this forum.
I've never seen someone seek professional advice from any user on revleft. They know what they're asking.
You mean I might not have Aspergers/ADD/ADHD/Down Syndrome/Bipolar Disorder/Odepial Complex? :scared:
