Cry Freedom's first half is pretty good. Unfortunately, the second half has too much in the way of yuppie white heroics, and focuses way too much on the main character (who shouldn't have been the main character in the first place).

A Dry White Season (1989) is directed by Euzhan Palcy, a black woman from Martinique and is adapted from a novel by the South African writer Andre Brink. The picture features good performances by Donald Sutherland and Marlon Brando (who took only a nominal fee to play the part of a defense attorney.)

Boseman and Lena (1999) was directed by John Berry who was black listed in Hollywood and is from the play by Athol Fugrad.

Cry Freedom from 1987 is about the journalist Donald Woods' investigation into the death of Steve Biko at the hands of South African security forces. Denzel Washington plays Biko. CynicalIdealist has accurately described the movie's weaknesses.

Yeah, you know, I've been meaning to see that one for ages as well but for one reason or another never got around to it. I'm wondering the same thing. Anyone seen it?

Also, District 9 (despite being misinterpreted by a lot of American critics as being about immigration) is a parable about apartheid. I personally didn't find it a particularly compelling one, but there you have it.
