Can anyone recommend me a good, reliable, affordable one?

I think I only need 8gb or so.

Thanks

There's sooo many reasons not to use Apple.

Anyway, when I read the thread title I read "isnt made by people" and it was really disturbing. Does that make me a technophobe?

I use winamp. I don't think it is particularly good, but I like how compact I can make it so it doesn't clutter my desktop.

I think he means portable mp3 player, not a piece of software...

Creative makes good MP3 players, i think. At least, they used to. I heard they're fucking up now.

Name some.
1) Apple sucks.

2) Their software is bloated.

3) They don't let you use their products the way you want.

4) Their shit is overpriced.

5) Their shit is trendy hipster bullshit.

All of them.
there is a truth to this.

Apple doesnt make the music player. It simply designs the hardware and software and then pays other companies to produce the actual stuff for them. It is produced for Apple to own.

even then, a company is not something that is capable of producing anything. A human is necessary at the very least for producing something.

So, all of the music players are good.

Yeah, these are the two most inhibiting factors for me. The latter isn't really a good reason, but it stops me anyway, lol... On the other hand, the former is the biggest one. I've never understood, generally, the compulsion to buy something exorbitantly priced when something which can be had at a fraction of the cost will suffice... This applies to everything from pants to automobiles, IMO, but especially when it comes to gadgets where the primary concern should be utility and not fashion.

Why on Earth are they using FAT16?

Probably cause it is simple. It is not like these things can run linux so it pretty much means writing your own file system handling code. Not an easy task with modern file systems.

My bad.

I've mainly used Sansa and they have worked fine. Would recommend something else if you want to use less common formats like FLAC as, as far as I know, Sansa players don't support them. There are probably better options, but I will flat out say I have used Apple and I will never again deal with their fucking bs ever again.
