I've developed an interest in this this area recently and I was wondering if anyone could recommend some decent (and easy to read) books on this topic? I'm going to be travelling a bit some what and I just want a couple of books to help me pass the time while I sit in transit. I'm particularly interested in the first stirring of civilisation, especially with the creation of the city and writing and also I'm very interested in the Aegean bronze age collapse and the Sea People (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_people). I was watching a lecture on this topic by Dr. David Neiman (youtube page: http://www.youtube.com/user/DrDavidNeiman) and he mentions this book, "History Begins at Sumer" (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/toc/0812212762/ref=dp_toc?ie=UTF8&n=266239), and I was wondering if it was worth getting. Any other suggestions will be welcomed greatly.
