Give me some historical facts on this woman so I can prove to my family that their romanticized bourgeois view of her as being a "wonderful woman" is way off. The Indian-side of my family really dislike me for criticizing her.

Thousands of communist cadre and sympathizers were brutally tortured, raped and murdered during the State of Emergency that she imposed upon India. During this period she ruthlessly silenced all opposition.
Also, her birth control policies often involved the forceful castration of the rural Indian masses.

Most people who would like her probably don't care about the murdering of communists.
At the birth control - Really? :crying:

Many people unassociated with the communist movement too met the same fate. She even imprisoned bourgeois journalists who supported other parliamentary parties.

They mention something like it in one line in wikipedia.

In reality it was totally horrible. They used to set up tents, catch unwilling or ignorant peasants and workers from the surrounding villages and just vasectomise and even castrate them.

Better say Khrushchevite USSR and Tito's Yugoslavia. Stalin's (actually analysis of CPSU during Stalin) about independent India and their rulers are different. They consider the new Indian rulers bourgeoisie.
Actually, the analysis was basically wrong. They were not even considerable to be called even "bourgeoisie", they were worse than that.

Seriously? Indira Gandhi was thoroughly corrupt. She ran for election on the platform of "Stop Poverty", but then fucked up the economy so badly that she had to call a state of emergency and lock up all of her opposition -- who were regular people who had lost their jobs, and weren't just communists.
Adding to that, the Supreme Court of India accusing her of corruption during the 1971 election.
And add to that the absolutely insane Operation Blue Star. The idea of Indira Gandhi being a "wonderful woman" isn't a romanticized bourgeois view. It's just fucking lunacy.
