We don't seem to have a specific forum dedicated to gaming so I thought this would be the best place to post. If this is moved I do not want this to become another awful chit-chat thread as this is based on actual artistic appreciation and not lolcats or something stupid like that.
What do you guys think about roguelikes? What is your favorite roguelike? What weaknesses do you see in the genre of rogeulikes?
For me my favorite roguelike is ADOM. I have also played Nethack and a bit of Dwarf Fortress(technicallty not a roguelike outside of adventure mode, but it does have ASCII graphics and various other aspects pertaining to roguelikes). I'm a newbie to the genre and wanted to know your own thoughts.
To me the biggest weakness of roguelikes is the lack of graphics and the poor user interfaces in most games. Lack of graphics personally don't bug me, but not being able to use my mouse for anything does sometimes become an annoyance. The strengths I see is also in the lack of actual graphics(lol, it is a weakness too). Since most games in the genre depends upon simple ASCII graphics it is significantly easier to code a game in this genre. It is also better for using your imagination since nothing is displayed beyond he simple ASCII graphics pretty much forcing you to use your imagination.
Roguelikes have quickly become one of my favorite genres in that the devs in this genre don't care about profit or anything. The priority always seems to be on depth of gameplay, which has always been my concern in gaming. Advanced graphics annoy me because I hate buying new consoles and new gfx cards. I would like for game developers to stop improving graphics for a decade or so and focus on optimizations of their shitty games and actual gameplay. Sorry if this is kind of a rant.. I just hate how poorly optimized most games are. Also I am making this post somewhat drunk...
