"The only thing I can tell you is that I thought I was a Jew for a long time and was very happy being a Jew, then later on came [Danish and Jewish director] Susanne Bier, and suddenly I wasn't so happy about being a Jew. That was a joke. Sorry. But it turned out that I was not a Jew. If I'd been a Jew, then I would be a second-wave Jew, a kind of a new-wave Jew, but anyway, I really wanted to be a Jew and then I found out that I was really a Nazi, because my family is German. And that also gave me some pleasure. So, I, what can I say? I understand Hitler. I think he did some wrong things but I can see him sitting in his bunker. I'm saying that I think I understand the man. He is not what we could call a good guy, but yeah, I understand much about him and I sympathize with him ... But come on! I'm not for the Second World War. And I'm not against Jews. No, not even Susanne Bier. I am very much for them. As much as Israelis are a pain in the ass. How do I get out of this sentence? Okay, I am a Nazi. As for the art, I'm for Speer. Albert Speer I liked. He was also one of God's best children. He has a talent that ... Okay, enough."
Personally, I just think he's nuts.

He retracted this statement, but I still think he's batshit crazy. Even worse is that the actors in his film are likely going to be indirectly punished at Cannes for his idiocy.

Albert Speer ..slave labour back in fashion in the world of the Rich eh?

was he drunk, or is he just an idiot? and his excuse is rather weak:
Von Trier later, at his own press conference, apologized again, stated that "Holocaust is the worst crime that ever happened; I have nothing against Jews; I have a Jewish name, and all my children have Jewish names", and said that his distinctive Scandinavian humor was misunderstood by the international press corps: "It was really stupidly done and it was in the wrong forum. At the press conference with Danish journalists, there were no problems, but I do not think the international journalists understand my Danish humor"

What the fuck
He's just trying to be notorious. He has to out-do himself every time he brings a film to Cannes. Melancholia doesn't have the genital mutilation of Antichrist, so he has to create the necessary Trier-Cannes scandal himself at the press conference.

I had to wiki this person up, never heard of him and have no idea what his films are like (do they suck?).
Also it has not really made the news in Britain.

Saying this shit in Germany is going to either get you killed or arrested. In his case, he would probably get prohibited from entering the country, like Geert Wilders in England. I guess he is trying to be funny...I wonder how funny he finds it if he were one of Albert Speer's slave laborers? Or one of the last people executed by Hitler, days before the end of the war? Would he still sympathize with them? stupid asshole.

No. In fact, they are excellent. Dogville is a masterpiece; Europa is also among the best films I ever saw.

He is not a Nazi. He started out trying to explain how he felt an affinity for Jews growing up, because he has a Jewish name and thought he was Jewish. Then he found out he was German, and he started talking about Jewishness and German-ness, and soon he'd started saying some clearly stupid things, about stereotypes, and, basically, having backed himself into a corner said, something like, okay, I'm a Nazi, is that what you wanted me to say?
He was not proclaiming himself a Nazi. He was really calling himself a stupid idiot. People physically present got it, but once you strip out all the context, well, you get banned from Cannes.

Lars von Trier (I though most people have heard of him?) is a weird guy and has done some good films (I watched his version of 'Medea' not long ago). This statement strikes me as more weird and incoherent than anything. It is offensive to Germans as it seems like he is implying Germans are Nazis by nature... I think yes this was a joke but in very poor taste, not funny and far too incoherent to make much sense. I'm not surprised he was shunned to be honest and it is his own fault.

The delivery is obviously deadpan and the "I'm also german" thing was part of it: his family is jewish.

lars von Trier is an idiot. Brilliant movies...statement is shit.
Also nice to see the expression on Kirsten Dunst. I saw the above movie from a different angle and her expression when he said what he said was priceless.

Dunst's response made the whole thing hilarious especially since her father is German. As to von Trier's comments it seemed like he was trying to make a point then got lost in his own rambling.

Lars von Trier has given another explanation which I find rather convincing:
“I had actually been drinking quite a lot, but now I’m sober,” he said. “I would suggest to everybody, don’t stop drinking. If I had been, I would be almost asleep at the press conference and would not have said those stupid things.” http://nyti.ms/lwYvLQ

Personally, I just think he's nuts.
The guy is just trying to be funny in a sort or Germanic way. BTW, I think his movies suck.
I'd much rather watch something--anything, really--by Herzog or Fassbinder. Also, With few exceptions, Wim Wenders movies also suck.

Of course he is not a nazi. He's just a crazy prankster and as someone already wrote here - nothing he says shall be taken seriously.
