Are many people familiar with the Blaxploitation film genre from the 60's & 70's?

I watched a documentary about it not too long ago, it discussed how organisations like the NAACP opposed it. I haven't seen any of the films, the only footage I have seen were little clips on youtube. I was searching for some around the internet not too long ago, but I didn't have any luck. I've got an album of a collection of music from the films, and I'm loving it.

From what I saw on the documentary, the films were controversial because they focused on subjects such as ghetto and crime, sexualised Black women and 'pimps' - all within the context of race, and Black-White relations at the time.

I'm sure there will be other revleft members that will now more about Blaxploitation films then me.

There are quite a few really entertaining ones.

I used to watch them when I was a kid but I'm absolutely no expert and didn't really form any deep opinion of underlying contexts, I do remember thinking they were really funny.

I can't believe anyone hasn't seen the original shaft films. What have you been doing with your life? :p Foxy Brown and Coffy or just about any Pam Grier film is also excellent.

There were a handful of outstanding movies in the genre, particularly Black Caeser (1974) The Spook Who Sat by the Door (1974), Cotton Comes to Harlem (1970) and Truck Turner (1974.)

Superfly, The Legend of Nigger Charley, Boss Nigger, and Disco Godfather are all pretty good. Check out Blackenstein too, it sucks but it's pretty hilarious.

I like most types of exploitation not just the black variety. Most of the best ones never got DVD releases as far as I know, I have about 40 or 50 on VHS and there are plenty of torrents out there.

I've only seen a few. Oddly one of the ones that stands out as being more memorable than most was the blaxploitation throwback "Black Dynamite".

Coffy is actually what got me into the whole genre, and other exploitation films.

I never really cared for them, I love exploitation or grindhouse films. Sugar Hill is one of the best blaxploitation films i've seen because it combines zombies also. I'm into more of the splatter film and cannibal/zombie exploitation films.

Blacula is the shit.

You beat me to it!

I haven't seen too much of the genre but I liked Hitman, which was of course a remake of Get Carter but not an abomination like the one with Stallone. I'm not sure if Shaft counts to be honest though I liked it. Films with Pam Grier are worth watching as well.

I should look out for some of the films suggested in this thread though. ;)
