View Full Version : How the Communist Party did in Ontario

I decided to sit down and do a small comparison of How the CPC (Ontario) did in this election when compared to other parties (i.e. not the three major parties -- Green, NDP, PC and Liberal).

in Bramalea-Gore-Malton-Springdale:
1.)CHILELLI, FRANK Party: INDEPENDENT Votes: 823 %: 2.1
2.)CUKOFF, HOWARD Party: COMMUNIST PARTY OF CANADA (ONTARIO) votes: 472 %: 1.2

I know Frank Chilelli personally and he is in the CPC(M-L). I'm not sure what to think about their strategy of running candidates as independents, but I think he still would have came out on top of Comrade Howard Cukoff if he had run under the CPC(M-L) banner. It seems to me that the CPC(M-L) is growing in popularity well the CPC is falling in popularity.

Parkdale-High Park:
1.)GRZYWNA, STAN Party: FAMILY COALITION PARTY OF ONTARIO votes: 348 %: 1.4
2.)LARSEN, KARIN Party: COMMUNIST PARTY OF CANADA (ONTARIO) Votes: 201 %: 0.8
3.)STEELE, JOHN Party: INDEPENDENT Votes: 110 %: 0.4
4.)FIELD, DICK Party: FREEDOM PARTY OF ONTARIO Votes: 106 %: 0.4

Way to go Comrade Karin! Possibly if Karin had more time to campaign she would have done even better, still a very respectable outcome.

York West
1.)BLACK, CHRISTOPHER Party: COMMUNIST PARTY OF CANADA (ONTARIO) Votes:470 %: 2.0

This is the area of Jane & Finch, a tough working class neighborhood. Christopher didn't really have any "Fringe" competition here, even so getting 2% is pretty good in my opinion.

Scarborough Centre
1.)MANIOS, COSTAS Party: INDEPENDENT Votes: 2940 %: 8.0
2.)INTERNICOLA, JOSEPH Party: FAMILY COALITION PARTY OF ONTARIO Votes: 438 %: 1.2
3.)ROWLEY, ELIZABETH Party: COMMUNIST PARTY OF CANADA (ONTARIO) Votes: 208 %: 0.6

I'm not sure who the independent is in this riding, but he managed to beat the Green Party candidate by about 2,500 votes or 7.2%. He came close to the NDP candidate that came in at 8.8%. I really have not a clue as too why Comrade Liz chose this riding to run in.

Hamilton East
1.)MANN, BOB Party: COMMUNIST PARTY OF CANADA (ONTARIO) Votes: 380 %: 1.2
1.)GREENAWAY, KELLY Party: INDEPENDENT Votes: 380 %: 1.2
2.)IZZOTTI, MICHAEL Party: FAMILY COALITION PARTY OF ONTARIO Votes: 309 %: 1.0

A tie for Bob Mann. This is disapointing, as Hamilton is a Steelworker city and Bob is a retired Steelworker and longtime labour activist. No clue who the independent is that he tied with.

Ottawa Centre
1.)RYAN, STUART Party: COMMUNIST PARTY OF CANADA (ONTARIO) Votes: 261 %: 0.6
2.)SZYMANOWICZ, MATT Party: FREEDOM PARTY OF ONTARIO Votes: 195 %: 0.4
3.)GUIRGUIS, FAKHRY Party: INDEPENDENT Votes: 194 %: 0.4

Good to see Comrade Ryan come out on top of the Freedom Party (a right wing "free market" party).

Please keep in mind that the election is not totally finished as I show these results, and that I did not include the Green, NDP, PC or Liberal party in this comparison.

To me this comparison reflects the need for CPC & CPC(M-L) to work together if they wish to participate in bourgeois elections effectively. I see that the CPC(M-L) does well in most of the ridings they run in when compared to other "fringe" candidates, and they almost always come out on top of CPC candidates. What is the usefullness of this?

However, I don't think a merger of these two parties is something that will ever happen. I don't want to say that the CPC should die, bu they would definately not be a better alternative to CPC(M-L). Possibly the answer is a new CP for Canada.

The Green Party is starting to gain more votes, but I do not see them as an alternative that Marxist would pick. However, there are some good radicals in that party that would be worth voting for as oppossed to some of the Welfare-Liberal NDP'ers.

Any comments?

That's good that their getting some votes. When you listed the major parties you didn't include, you mentioned the PC but not the Alliance Party. Any perticular reason? Their so popular in BC it's sick.

The Canadian Alliance does not run in Ontario since our Conservatives are so right wing that it is unnecassary to have a second mainstream right party.

You included Green as mainstream eh? I wouldn't. Although here in Ottawa Centre they got over 3000 votes (10x as many as the Communist Representative), I still would not consider them mainstream. I think you are doing this to tint your 'chart' in your favour :P But anyways, it doesn't matter much.

I also see them as a lot better alternative for a leftist to pick than the communist parties in this province, but that is a matter of personal opinion.

The Green Party is not fully mainstream yet, but they are getting close. They get WAY more media attention than any of the other "fringe" parties, and they ran candidates in all but one (1) riding in Ontario.

The Greens are gaining popularity in BC too. They almost won a seat in the provincial legislature during the last election and actually got 12.4% of the popular vote I believe.
