I thought this scene from 'Libertarias' was very touching.

What do you guys think?

I think it's ironic that a Marxist-Leninist is expressing praise for a film celebrating the very anarchists that his own movement violently suppressed. Don't you know that the Spanish Revolution was premature adventurism, or ultra-leftism, or social fascism, or whatever the hell it was that you people decided it was at any given moment?

I agree. Libertarias is one of my favorite movies, and that is one of my favorite scenes. I love the sound the Jesus statue makes when it's hit by a book (or something) half a minute into the scene. It's hollow, just like Christianity.

If there is one thing I hate, it is sectarianism. I do not agree with what the CCCP did to the Anarchists. I support the Anarchists 100% fully, and I will stand beside them.

Fair dos, fair dos. At least you have good taste in movies, so that's a few points in your favour. ;)

What I think people are missing here, is The Man is a misguided youth who betrayed the Black Flag (he did uphold Anarchist theory for awhile as the main way of achieving Class Struggle revolution), and then went polar opposite. :p

Also, good movie. Haven't seen it in years.

I do sympathize with the Anarchists, and I believe they have their ideologies set straight. However, I think it's quite misguided when it comes to achieving those ideologies.

Isn't this a bit of a Catch 22?

Being against most or all other leftist political ideologies at the expense of your own. Most leftists are at least partially sectarian but most acknowledge it is wrong (at least towards the tendencies they find to be the more acceptable ones  ).

There is a BIG difference between being sectarian and recognising that there are unreconcilable differences between certain schools of thought.

That is true... I acknowledge that there are some schools of thought not compaitble with Marxist-Leninism though most think I am a sectarian anyway...

I do however think there is a little bit of sectarianism in most of us... other than I guess ultra-pan-leftists. ;)

Yeah that's fair enough, I was mostly referring to Trotskyites and to a lesser degree anarchists who call MLs sectarian for criticising their positions. Who are free to talk as much rubbish as they like about "Stalin's terror" but as soon as someone takes a critical stance on something they support they are branded as sectarian, as if to suggest that they want left unity any more than we do, yeah right.

Anyway I saw this film a year or so ago at the BFI and it is very very good even if I don't agree with it politically. Beats the hell out of Ken Loach's Land and Freedom

...better to be criticised than reallocated to the Gulag....

:D

or...was that too much sectarianism??;)

spain was a cluster fuck. i think the anarchists should have joined the popular army but the anarchists were some of the most militant in the war.

The anarchist militias were ultimately incorporated into the Popular Army; for example, the Durruti Column became 26th Infantry Division.
