Turkey and the US have agreed on an action-plan to eradicate the Kurdish paramilitary group, the PKK.

This story has a special significance for me because...I predicted it.
In a thread on the war in Iraq and its supporters, I wrote this...
But then America has treated the Kurds rather better than Hussein did (so far)...so your bias, hawarameen, is pretty obvious.
Be it noted, however, that your favorite ethnic group has already been involved in one shootout against another ethnic minority in Iraq...the Turkomen, I believe they're called.
Inter-ethnic warfare with American-supplied weaponry may be a satisfying future for you and yours...until the American imperialists decide to back somebody else!
When you find yourself in the shit, perhaps you'll remember my warning.
And when you have to stand up against U.S. and British imperialism (if you can), you'll see who will support you...and who won't.

The "deal", of course, is that the Turks will supply occupation troops for Iraq in exchange for American assistance in "eradicating" the folks who fought for Kurdish liberation against Turkish ethnic terror.
And the point, of course, is that those who support U.S. imperialism in the belief that America will "help" their favorite ethnic group will always land in the shit.
Just like the Kurds.
Again.

Are" the folks who fought for Kurdish liberation against Turkish ethnic terror" being put under the banner labeled terrorists?

This is pretty much the same thing the U$ did to them during the Iraq/Iran war, promising to help them with independence all the while making backroom deals with Iran and Iraq to ensure that it never happened.

According to the BBC, the United States has designated the PKK as a "terrorist" group.

Bad move Uncle Sam, I really am sceptical about how clever it is to attack a guerrilla army that has been around since the mid 70's, has in excess of 5000 members, and has been able to survive numerous turkish attempts to destroy it.
Maybe this will be another bog for the yankees to get stuck in :(
Are PKK still marxist?

Kurds Ready to Declare War on Turkey
YEREVAN, October 9. KADEK, the assembly for freedom and democracy in Kurdistan (former Kurdish workers party), has already deployed half its forces on Turkish territory in preparation for war. As a Rosbalt correspondent reports, this was announced by Ielmaz Shiar, the official spokesman for KADEK in the Caucasus.
He said that Turkey has completely ignored all the peaceful proposals of the Kurdish party and as a result war is now almost inevitable. Mr Shiar said the war will be different this time. It will take place in Turkish cities and not in the mountains like before. He said the Kurds are not afraid to wage war as this time there are tens and even hundreds of thousands of people ready to fight.
Despite the US' declarations that it will defend Turkey from KADEK, Mr Shiar said he does not expect this to happen. 'The situation has changed and now the Kurds' relations with the US are just as close as those of Ankara,' he said. He also mentioned KADEK's relations with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan and the Kurdish democratic party. He said the country is now united and these former rivals are now ready to form an alliance. 'Our alliance is not just political but military as well,' he added.
On September 1 KADEK called an end to the ceasefire declared by Abdullah Ocalan 5 years ago. The KADEK leader presented its 'roadmap' to Ankara for resolving the Kurdish-Turkish conflict. Now KADEK is saying there will be a large-scale war if Turkey does not meet its demands by December 1.

A most interesting report, if accurate.
First, it would appear as if the PKK has dropped its "Marxist" pretensions; an "assembly for freedom and democracy" in Kurdistan sounds more like simple nationalism.
Second, they boast of their "ties" to the United States. Meanwhile, the U.S. has just granted a fat "loan"--$8.5 billion--to Turkey to pay for the mercenaries who will occupy Iraq...and who will almost certainly be used to attack the former PKK strongholds.
Third, they also boast of an alliance with two other Kurdish groups that have been notorious lackeys of U.S. imperialism.
Some people never learn.

Turkish soldiers deployed in Iraq will open fire on Kurdish fighters if they come under attack, a senior general has warned.

You see this is why the Kurds should have never trusted the US in the first place. They trusted the US in WWI to help bring back Kurdistan, but they lied.In the Gulf War the Kurds trusted the US again, and another betrayal happened. Now the US has promised to get rid of the Kurds once and for all and stop their whining for the return of Kurdistan. When will the Kurds learn, that the US is a Jackal that comes in the form of a Lion.

Is not only money. Turkey has more important reasons than money. Consider the following as well benefits that turkey will have now:
They will show their military power to the region, making them number one power.
Prove that they are Americas loyal child.
Get political support for the Cyprus problem. As you know the European court is putting a lot of pressure to turkey.
Get political support for joining the EEC.
And finally but not least important: TO STOP THE DEVELOPMENT OF A KURDISH STATE. The Turks have oppressed the minorities found all over Turkey (Kurds, Armenians, Greeks, etc). for Kurdistan to exist, turkey will lost a part of their territory. Taking into account the rest of the minorities, this will create a chaos because the other minorities will awake and demand their human rights as well as more territory to be given to the new Kurdish state. Something like a second fall of the Othoman empire. ļ
There is a very interesting scenario going on now. Turkey with the thousand faces. They want to be European but they are always close to the U$ and Israel. They want liberation for the poor Iraqian people, but they don¡¦t consider themselves the real barrier for the liberation of Cyprus (anyone remember how many Turkish soldiers still occupy Cyprus? 45,000 maybe?
Anyway. We need a miracle, we need another superpower that will be progressive and willing to offer more justice than America. And I don¡¦t think that this will be Europe (I hope but I cant see that with people like Blair, Athnar and Mussolini on the way) or China (Who has shown more interest to his new airspace toys rather than world politics)
