This was kind of interesting. Maybe it would be a touch creepy to visit one of these places though.

Nice thread, I love stuff like this.
I have seen Varosha in Cyprus from the outide, it's fascinating. I'd love to go to Pripyat some day, and Gunkanjima in Japan looks awesome.
These are some of the pics from outside Varosha if anyone is interested. These are about the best it is possible to get because it's forbidden and the Turkish military have watchtowers. The tall ruined building is one that was shelled by the Turkish navy in 1974, when they invaded, and it has been closed off ever since. Weirdly though, people can still use the beach in front, but it is so hard to take pictures from there because on the left is a guard tower (very last picture) with a guy who just patrols around randomly. The Turk/Greek border crossing in Nicosia also has an area like this, but narrower.

You should check out the American Flats just outside of Virginia City Nevada. Partied there a few times, it can be pretty dangerous at night because there are just random holes in the ground and pretty bad flooding in one area that goes stories down, so you don't want to fall in there when you're drunk. Anyways some pics:

I have a ton of pics I could post tomorrow, but I'm hella tired right now.
Anyways it used to be a mill that did something with gold and silver.

Okay here are some pictures:
This is what it looks like when you're coming up to it:

Not that exciting right. On the inside of that first building:

That's me standing there. That water goes down a few stories and is ice cold.
The other side of that second building:

To give you perspective on the size:http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/12950_1248647969593_1031271042_778475_2852430_n.jp g
Me standing in what looks like a random hole in the wall.
From that vantage point:

That looks like a giant wall, but it's really like a labyrinth in there with multiple tunnels going every which way.

Don't really know what those were for...

Standing on top of them...I know it doesn't look it, but it was freaking cold that day!
I have like a thousand of these...

Centralia, Pennsylvania
Johnathan Faust opened Bull’s Head Tavern in Centralia in 1841, and Centralia was incorporated as a borough in 1866. The anthracite coal industry was the principal employer in the community until the 1960s, when most of the companies went out of business. An exposed vein of coal ignited in 1962 thanks to weekly garbage burning, and as a result a huge underground coal fire commenced. Attempts to extinguish the fire were unsuccessful, and it continued to burn throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Adverse health effects were reported by several people due to the carbon monoxide produced.
In 1979, locals became aware of the scale of the problem when a gas station reported a fuel temperature of 172 degrees Fahrenheit (77.8°C). This provoked widespread attention, boosted in 1981 when a 12-year-old almost plunged to his death as a 4 foot wide, 150 foot deep sinkhole suddenly opened beneath his feet. In 1984, $42 million was spent on relocation, with most residents moving to the nearby Mount Carmel and Ashland. In 1992, Pennsylvania condemned all houses within the borough, meaning that of the 1,000+ residents in 1981 – only a handful now remain – mainly priests. The fire still rages on, and according to experts could do so for another 250 years.
Holy crap.
Silly question perhaps, but where does the air come from for these underground fires to continue? Couldn't these air supply lines be simply shut?

I have been to Centralia multiple times.. They do want to close the air supply, but it's not that easy. They are extremely well-hidden, and no one has been able to find them.

It's called the American Flats. It's right outside of Virginia City in Nevada, I think it was a mill that got abandoned when they couldn't find much more gold or silver. It's a pretty cool place to party or to just climb around. Of course you're not supposed to get to it, it's "private property" or some shit like that, but nobody really cares.

Two others that come to mind:
The old Zeljava air base (uploader put music that totally doesn't match so just mute it)

And the Salton Sea in California- plenty of junk and development that were pretty much abandoned when the artificial sea proved to be too salty for beachfront and fishing. All that's left is perfect for your post-Apoc junk.
