I've read that horse meat tastes the most like human flesh. I can't remember where I read that though.

God hates ham because otherwise the shrimp would be lonely...
And yes, humanflesh does apparently taste like pork, although chicken and veal are mentioned often too: http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/the-lay-scientist/2010/sep/05/human-meat-taste-cannibal

It's a question that's burning the lips of every student of one prof at our department (he was involved in a funeral where it was part of the culture) :p
Also, there's some environmental reasons, but part of me is convinced from the few times I've tried is that it tastes pretty bad :p

I don't know why everybody always feels the need to focus entirely on pork...you know, of all the forbidden species, the millions of forbidden species, somehow, people only think of pork. What about the camel? And how about hares and rabbits? Why are we hating on them? :crying:

Exactly.
I don't think anyone is going to think it's a loss :p

hey, camel tastes not bad at all.
i was actually really surprised how specified the list was. i always thought it was just an general "no toes, no rolling in the mud, you figure it out yourself" kind of rule but no, it actually lists a shit load of animals.
what i wonder is how anyone can hate on the Hyrax:
http://imagecache6.allposters.com/MED/40/4052/M3ILF00Z.jpg
you know that according to the catholic church the capybara (which actually looks a lot like the hyrax but is in fact an giant guinea pig) is an fish.
http://www.cryptomundo.com/wp-content/uploads/the-capybara.jpg
the story behind it is an fine case of catholic opportunism: the conquistadors could of course only eat fish during lent. But try and find enough fish in the middle of the andes to feed an army for 40 days. so the pope declared the capybara an fish because he swims a lot and looks a lot like an beaver and an beaver has "scales" on their tails (conveniently forgetting that the capybaras don't have scaled tales, no tales at all actually). Problem solved.

and muslims can eat most meat even if it is not killed by muslim custom but instead by an jewish or christian butcher but not if its from an hindu butcher?

From what I know, in the Netherlands, before there were enough muslims for shops to spring up, most muslim immigrants just ate kosher.

I guess it's because its a huge thing for the western world (if you eat pork means that you're a good christian). I guess because of that europeans have lots of pork products.
Wait a moment, no rabbit??? Pork, ok, worse for you but I respect it, but rabbit? probably one of the best meats in the world, in escabeche (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Escabeche) or as I really lve it a la moutarde (http://www.frenchgardening.com/cuisine.html?pid=1169488697207375)

Dogs wouldn't be allowed, not sure if that was a joke? Carnivores were a no-no I believe.
As for the parasites and tapeworms in pork.. I read that my self but a friend of mine argued that they would of still had adequate cooking methods to kill off the majority at least. Can anyone confirm either?

No no no no no, no no, no no no...no eating of dogs, I promise :)
Interestingly enough, there's quite the anti-dog sentiment, particularly amongst Hasidic types, because dogs are considered to pretty much be the incarnation of all evil. I think it's from some kind of story, 'imagine evil as a dog tied to pole, and it can only go so far, as much as it tries'...also there's a specific prohibition against keeping pets that could scare women into miscarrying* (inorite?), specifically...barking dogs. So there's a certain amount of animosity towards our canine chums. On the other hand, a few Biblical figures had trusty doggy comrades protecting them and stuff, so it seems to be a bit of a grey area. Still, definitely no eating dogs, that's nasty...
*I'll point out that I don't think that's quite the line. More, 'oh, people shouldn't keep pets that scare people, like barking dogs. The bad things that could come from this include, but are not limited to, women miscarrying in sheer terror!'...I I'm not going to flip through 5,422 pages of Aramaic in a vain search for something that looks vaguely like the Hebrew for dog, to then get a direct quote, though, so we'll just have to leave it at that
EDIT: Googled!
R. Kahana, according to others R. Assi, and according to still others R. Abba in the name of R. Simeon b. Lakish, said: "Whoso raises a vicious dog in his house prevents charity to proceed therefrom for the poor are afraid to go in as it is written [Job, vi. 14]: "As though I were one who refuseth kindness to a friend." ("As though I were one who refuseth" is expressed in Hebrew by one word, viz., lamos; in Greek λαμος; means dog, 1 and hence R. Simeon's inference.) Said R. Na'hman: "He even forsaketh the fear of the L-rd," for it is written at the end of the verse [ibid., ibid.]: "And forsaketh the fear of the L-rd."
Once a woman went into a certain house to bake, and a dog, through barking at her, caused her to have a miscarriage. Said the landlord of the house "Fear him not, I have deprived him of his teeth and claws"; but the woman answered: "Throw thy favors to the dogs, the child is already gone!"
So now we know :)

Probably because ham is gross, I wouldn't know personally but looks gross to me. Not to mention you can get 70 or so diseases (http://www.khilafatworld.com/2009/09/why-pork-is-haram-prohibited-in-islam.html) from the beasts. This being said, I don't have a problem with Piglet, Mrs. Piggy or any other swine characters. I quite like the Muppets and all things Jim Hensen, I just don't want to touch or eat pork. Further, I don't really care, if, to the gentile observer/reader this may seem odd, archaic, silly, stupid or laughable.

I heard on a documentary that pork was prohibited because it was always the first meat to go off if kept to long. I guess the same applies to shellfish if you live in a hot climate.
But I agree that pigs are too much like humans to eat them, at least whilst actually about it. The first time I heard of this was watching Mythbusters when the used pig corpses as a substitute for humans testing something to do with canon shot.
BTW, is it true that fireman don't like things like pork crackling, because it smells like burning humans?

to settle the debate on what humans taste like
It was like good, fully-developed veal, not young, but not yet beef. It was very definitely like that, and it was not like any other meat I had ever tasted. It was so nearly like good, fully developed veal that I think no person with a palate of ordinary, normal sensitiveness could distinguish it from veal. It was mild, good meat with no other sharply defined or highly characteristic taste such as for instance, goat, high game, and pork have. The steak was slightly tougher than prime veal, a little stringy, but not too tough or stringy to be agreeably edible. The roast, from which I cut and ate a central slice, was tender, and in color, texture, smell as well as taste, strengthened my certainty that of all the meats we habitually know, veal is the one meat to which this meat is accurately comparable.- William Seabrook (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Buehler_Seabrook#Cannibalism)

In the Middle East wild pigs were considered unclean as they ate from the dumps, the sewers and scavenged amongst the dead buried outside the city. Good reasons to view pork consumption dimly 3000 or more years ago with no anti-biotics. ;)
