View Full Version : The "Cure" for Sleep?
We will rise again

I was thinking today about how much more we could accomplish if we didn't need sleep.
We would "live" about 1/3 longer, be able to work more, and even develop more.
Is there any research under-way to eliminate this need? That would allow anabolism and all the other perks of sleep while we are conscious?

Yes, actually. It is called the Uberman or Everyman sleep shecdule, they are two different alternative sleep patterns. I intend to start the everyman once fall begins and I don't work any longer.
You can get more information about this on the web. It is hard to get into the habit, but if you can work your life around the everyman then you'll be awake much longer.
EDIT: This doesn't eliminate sleep, per say, but it does eliminate a vast majority of sleep, and makes all sleep REM sleep.

More info on alternate sleep cycles (Uberman, Everyman, Dymaxion, and Biphasic):

I agree that sleep sometimes seems like more of an annoyance than a necessity. I rarely sleep more than 5 hours per night, and always feel even more tired if I should happen to "sleep in."

Thank you for the replies, but I'm already aware of Polyphasic Sleep. I'm talking about eliminating the need completely, and healthily (with or without man-made drugs). Has anything been developed yet?

I'm sceptical of these so called procedures. Your organs and brain in particular need sleep to unwind. Its a basic biological need like eating. Any pills or potions would simply mask this need at the expense of health.

It's very interesting, but I've got admit though. I like sleep. It's not like you've got a bed available several times a day and if I'm going to sleep then it's not just to rest my mind but my body too. I really don't want to spend the majority of my resting time sat in a chair or lying across a park bench or something.
If you're locked in your room 24/7 or something then I'm sure it'd work quite well. Me, personally, I'd rather actually be out and about at the risk of losing effeciency :)
Plus, for god's sake, don't let employers discover this, otherwise you can kiss the 45 hour week goodbye.

I have a insomniac friend who tried to see how long he could go without sleep, I guess he thought it would be easy because he doesn't do it anyway. Your body needs sleep as a way for your muscles and brain to basically go into hibernate mode, to repair any damage in the cells. He went ten days without sleep, and went into a coma, your body's own emergency shutdown to repair this kind of damage. he was even hospitalized because he was so weak afterward.

Sleep is necessary for learning, it turns out. It gives your brain time to process the information it's received during the day. I've long wanted to be rid of the "curse" of sleep, but it its at the cost of learning, fuck it. I'll sleep.
