A new split is in process in the Communist Party of Spain.
The PCE branch in Asturias has decided to break with United Left (Izquierda Unida, the broad left coalition promoted by the PCE) and stand alone in the next Sunday local and regional elections.
More than 200 communist militants in Asturias have been suspended as PCE members, and his expulsion is expected before end of May.

Here is the link for their web site:

Communist branches in Salamanca, Extremadura, Jaén and Madrid strongly disagree with these expulsions. It seems the PCE disintegration is unavoidable.

That does not sound good.

What is the cause of the expulsion and the decission to break?

The cause is that PcE is in a coalition called IU (greens, socialdemocrats, etc.) and some more hardcore section, in this case in Asturies, had made another coalition. To the OP, this is old news, every election or so there's things like this, so is not that big.
