For those not in the know, Mudhoney was the original grunge band, and possibly the only reason Nirvana became anything, in fact, Dan Peters was Nirvana's drummer for a time(he was only not there for nevermind because Kurt didn't want to do anything to damage Mudhoney, so he opted to find a new drummer.) They aren't as famous, never really making it big like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, or Alice in Chains, but they are trully a great band nonetheless.

I think that they're probably the most under-rated grunge band ever. That reminds me, I should start listening to them again.

They kick some serious ass. I hate it that bands like Flipper, The Melvins, and Mudhoney don't get their due.

I've seen MudHoney live about 50 times. I even saw them play with Nirvana when I was 11.
I wouldn't say they were a factor in Nirvana's success, but they are a great band.

I envy you. They were, because it was them and the melvins that first influenced the band to "form" so to speak. The Melvins are another band, probably the very starting point and biggest influence, but Mudhoney is just a great band. they haven't changed the 80's and they are all the better for it.

Mudhoney are great. They weren't the first grunge band; half of Mudhoney was one half of the first grunge band.
Green River is widely recognized as the first grunge band. The four members' names were Mark Arm, Steve Turner, Stone Gossard, and Jeff Ament. The story is that Mark Arm and Steve Turner wanted to stay underground and keep their integrity, and Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament wanted to make it big.
Of course, Arm and Turner formed Mudhoney. The other half of the story is that Gossard and Ament formed a band called Mother Love Bone, who was basically going to do what Kurt Cobain and Nirvana ended up doing several years later, that is, bring grunge to the mainstream.
The lead singer for Mother Love Bone, a heroin addict by the name of Andy Wood, overdosed and died shortly after the band was formed. Chris Cornell and Matt Cameron, from Soundgarden, agreed to combine their talents with Ament and Gossard to produce a tribute album to Andy Wood. Then, Chad Smith (the drummer of Red Hot Chili Peppers) recommended to the band an unknown vocalist who he had taken a liking to.
This guy's name was Eddie Vedder. The band created an album, called Temple of the Dog (which eventually reached the top ten, #8 I believe) then Vedder, Gossard, Ament, McCready, and a drummer named Dave Krusen formed Pearl Jam. I'd say that "the rest is history" but that's too cliche.
It's weird, how interconnected the whole grunge community was.

Yes, Green river could be the first, but if you are going back that far, why not just start with the Screaming Trees?

Because the Screaming Trees weren't even remotely close to being the first "grunge" band.
It's not even really debateable that the Melvins were the first of this movement. They were together when Kurt was still in highschool I believe. Anyway, they were kind of metal at the time, but they are definately the pioneers.
It is amazing how interconnected the whole Seattle scene was. Every band knew each other and they were all friends. Well, not all, but still, it was very close knit. Alot of people think that scene is totally dead, but Seattle is still full of those kinds of bands. Alot of the lesser known bands that were there before the scene blew up are still there. Dead Moon still plays shows in the U-District all the time, I saw them a couple months ago.
Did anyone know the Gits ? They were my favorite in the scene. It was the band fronted by that girl, Mia Zapata, that was raped and murdered. The reason I ask is because, after 10 or so years, they caught the killer. Pick up the Hype! soundtrack, they're on that.

I love Mudhoney. Very underated/underplayed by commercial radio. Urban you lucky bastard. Those were great times to be out around Seattle.
Don't forget the beloved Pixies in all this. They were pretty influential to Nirvana as well.
I love the song that Alice in Chains did on the Sap EP with members of Mudhoney and Soundgarden. The song was Right Turn. It's funny, they even list the name of the band for that song as Alice Mudgarden
Damn...I miss Lane and AIC. :(

Yes! Recently i too have gotten heavily into AIC. They were a great band. The call response in Hate to feel is great (I can see: wish i couldnt see at all, i can feel: wish i couldnt feel at all). Soundgarden is my all time favorite band. Nirvana is a great band all around but they didnt get the time to experiment as much as soundgarden did, look at Down on the Upside.
And of course, the song Again is just incredible. Its a must for anyone into grunge or metal.
