This is why flag burning is a counter-productive form of protest... And why the south sucks

Who the hell tries and burn a flag at LSU? That is just asking for trouble.

What were they protesting? I couldn't hear them over the dickheads yelling USA.
But in all seriousness, burning a flag isn't always the best idea. Its understandable, but not desirable. I remember after this incident wanting to burn an American flag This (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/02/14/shawna-forde-convicted_n_823206.html) but i realized that it would do more harm than good once I cooled down.

All I got from it was, "Organized through Facebook." No clue and he didn't say much he just let himself be shouted down if you are going to do such an event you might as well see it through or just find another way to protest.

1. Burn Confederate flag.

2. Make douchebags burn Union flag in retaliation.

3. ???

4. Profit or something.

Looks like freedom of speech and "constitution" is not so important when it comes to things that right-wingers do not like..

Several hundred people gathered on the LSU campus Wednesday and effectively stopped an LSU grad student from burning an American flag on campus.

The student announced Tuesday that he intended to burn the flag. The announcement set off a wave of angry protests on Facebook and talk radio stations.

As the student approached the Parade Grounds at LSU Wednesday, students chanted, "USA! USA!" One man yelled, "My brothers died for you!"
Several people tossed water balloons and water bottles at the man. The graduate student was then escorted away by LSU Police. The flag burning did not occur.

You mean to say Americans are blindly patriotic, to the detriment of their freedoms and liberties? The very Americans that have willingly voted away their rights in the name of "national security", buying into a conformist vision that advocates individualism and the "American Dream" while shouting down those entertaining something as trivial and symbolic as a mere flag burning?

I kid. But seriously, this isn't surprising in the slightest. We Americans talk tough about the merits of free speech, while at the same time ensuring it doesn't happen.

A flag represents more than a government or an ideology, it represents a people. I can understand why a few people would get mad at the fact someone is, in their perspective, trying to defame the country as a whole by burning its most representative symbol.

This is a massive failure on all fronts, and cannot be spun to have a positive effect, whatever this dude thought he was going to accomplish, he did not think things through.

Yes, I'm sick of right-wing nationalist bullshit, too - but this guy is a fucking moron for putting himself in this situation. Probably not the best idea to go 1 vs. "several hundred" angry, ultra-patriotic Southerners. Plus, flag burning is so 1960s.

A flag represents more than a government or an ideology, it represents a people.

Do tell where in the stars and stripes it represents the working class, who are the vast majority of the people in the US?

The flags of capitalists states represent only one small group of people, the ruling class.

Just because we can understand the 'reasons' why these thugs got upset at the tought of 'their' flag being burnt, that alone should not prohibit us in condemning these thugs and their disgusting anti-democratic behaviour.

As you may infer from the videos, these college students are not working class.

Wow, someone in the angry mob yelled "crucify him!" at 5:15 in the video. Sadly, not that ironic...

While class analysis should trump all considerations of culture of nationality, it would be wrong to say that the flag only belongs to the ruling class. It represents an identity which, right or wrong, defines the context in which people form their perspectives. As a Marxist I don't have loyalty to any particular state, but I have no problem with hanging the flag of my cultural origin in my room.

My point was simply that you can't communicate revolutionary ideas to other people, be they struggling working class or white collar workers, by simply burning a symbol of their cultural identity.

I merged two threads on this topic, both in Politics.

Talk about blind nationalism to the core.

The girl at the end of the video shouting nationalist rhetoric was just overkill. As was the soldier shouting that his brother died for him. His brother died senselessly to enrich those with vested interests in war.

The guy proved though that true free speech is missing in the States.

In theory, the soldier would probably get discharged for protesting in uniform. In practice, I think he'll get away with a slap on the wrist.

Don't criticize blind people by associating them with moronic nationalists.

I meant no ill will toward the vision impaired.

I was just saying that the thoughtless reactionary response to the potential flag burner was over the top.

I'll agree with you on the fact that this guy made a tactical mistake in the way he went about his protest, all alone and trying to (unsuccessfully) burn a flag. However, despite whatever reservations we may have with this guys method of protest, I will still stand in solidarity with him over those thugs who showed up in their hundreds to silence this guy and display their hatred for free speech.

Same. I'm somewhat considering burning a flag on the Alabama campus to try and start a controversy or for the lolz.. most likely won't since I don't feel like getting killed.
