Well, you're an american and rather stupid. Also a trendster, if your best "anti-imperialist" putdown of America is to call California "occupied Mexico". "Their colonialists are better than our colonialists" indeed. But then again nobody cares about the natives who were 90% of the population in the region when both colonial republics fought over it
That said, yeah, if voting could change anything in the current system, etc - that's not an american exception.

Lol it wasn't a put down either. Its a George carlin skit I found funny. I wasn't aware that I was a trendster ( u mean hipster right lol) just for having used occupied mx. I actually thought my position to be quite unmainstream actually. I'm glad you set that straight. Also bout the 90% natives here, yeah I know, there blood runs through my veins. It seems to me you have something at stake in this thread.

Hipsters and trend followers are also often quite unmainstream in the general world. However there's a certain hipster trend of doing this about assuming one colonialist side was more deserving of the region than the other. Particularly in one of the mexican regions that resisted the most to spanish colonization.
Also I have nothing at stake in the thread, having never been, never lived or never set foot in the southwest, the closest thing to "a stake" I have is mexican family by marriage.
Thanks for the video fix.

Say what? Hipsters are often out of the mainstream fold? I disagree.
I dont know what city you live in, but in LA, they are the norm. At least with people in my demographic. That being said, they only resisted so much because the Spanish tried so little to 'conquer' the American Southwest. The Spanish found what they wanted far south of Arizona's desert.

actually in northern Mexico in general, including not only California and New Mexico and Tejas, but Sonora, Chihuahua, etc. these areas were conquered militarily initially by Spanish and later Mexican military forces to protect the criollo and meztizo settlers who were brought in and set up colonias, on land stolen from the indians.
in California before the American conquest the local indians were used as essentially slaves. the rancho economy was a feudal economy. they didn't pay wages. now, it may very well be that many of the individual ranchers were of meztizo ancestry...given that the Spanish brought few women with them to Mexico when they conquered it, it is highly likely.
so meztizo and criollo mexican settlers moved north in Mexico and took lands from the native indians and oppressed them. at the time of the first census in L.A. in 1850 only the Indians were distinguished with an ethnic indicator in the census list of names...names which were more than 90 percent Spanish.
moreover racism against the indigenous has historically been systemic in mexico. despite the meztizo majority.

I think it was Rodolfo Acuņa who wrote that: 'the spanish carried out the conquest, but the 'mestizaje' however carried out the actual occupation.' Oddly enough, I got that quote (and my location) from the book 'occupied america.'

On an unrelated note, Why are British people so fucking stupid? they colonize half the world, then call Americans racist for doing what they learned best from the british.
They constantly talk of how right-wing America is, yet they take Cameron's party to victory without much of a real fight.
They complain about America's role in the war in iraq, despite their country was pretty involved too.
maybe I shouldn't say stupid...why are British people such hypocrites?
Hey how about we stop condemning entire countries as "stupid" because of their political system
because that is actually really fucking stupid

The "stupidity" of America is the result of a few things:
- apathy
- shitty news
- shitty education system
- religion
- Political system
- Reactionary population (Tea Baggers, Republicans, etc.). Which is a result of the former points.
- emphasis from both sides of "patriotism" instead of questioning the government. Result of the former points.
- etc.

This applies to large swathes of the world. Massive support for fascists and reactionaries is sort of new in America compared to some european countries.

Your country still has a queen, who at one point, represented imperialism over 1/4 of the globe. Speak for yourself.

I don't think Hailtothethief would argue that the Canadian political climate is much better or more enlightened than that of the US, because he is not a fool.
What is an "average American"? This flawed use of the term comes out of a reactionary view of nation and nationhood, as "average American" implies that the "American nation" is something that actually exists objectively, when in reality it does not.

Precisely, i do suggest that it's not as bad as the American climate, but it is by no means good.

Not as bad? I'd like to know how or in what way.
But until then...I'll just wait here patiently for you to begin trashing the Canadian people as much as you have trashed the American people; afterall, since the Canadian climate isn't as good...or are you just a nationalist in disguise?

Would you like it if I did that?

I always thought that the majority of us Americans are willfully ignorant, and in denial of the atrocities that they fund with their tax dollars. I mean, the evidence exists and is hard to refute. It easier just to choose to be unaware
some times i feel like contemporary American culture (reality TV, pro wrestling, pro sports, CNN) is like a characterization of the personality disorders that are generated through such self-deception.
I don't know if its funny or sad, it's like kabuki theater

The only especially lame thing the Canadian monarchy has is that the Governor-General of Canada might one day be compelled to dismiss a Prime Minister or something. Also it helps continue some mostly symbolic ties between Canada and Britain. That's the only real political relevance, and I'm pretty sure that if the Governor-General did that there would be such an uproar that said links to the British monarchy would come to an end soon after unless it was a fascist PM crushing dissent or something.
But yeah, saying "Americans are stupid" is dumb. As for culture, here's a good read: http://www.rationalrevolution.net/articles/capitalism_culture.htm

apathy: this is the result of the rabid love of money and concern for no one
shitty news: this is the result of LIARS (for example, Fox News)
shitty education system: this is the result of the lack of parental dicipline (see apathy)
religion: this is the result of sheer ignorance (see shitty education)
political system: this is the result of "shitty education" and LIARS (see above)
reactionary population: this results in a SHITTY politcal system
emphasis from both sides of "patriotism" the result of (yes former points) as well as a controlling CAPITALIST MEDIA.

Errr, no one here identifies with the capitalist state they live in, let alone with a monarchy.

To be frank, I would much rather talk to a 'stupid American' than touch 'When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops?' ever again.
