View Full Version : Exposing Racism/Intolerance Online

Social networking sites these days have become a source for cowardly individuals sat behind computer screens to express their racial hatred. Although racism occurs "in the open" regularly, one thing I've noticed, particularly on Facebook, is a number of people spitting racist slurs on groups and pages, thinking that it's OK, and that they'll get away with it.
Whilst many choose to ignore this, I find it rather annoying. Hence why I decided to dedicate part of my blog (see sig) to exposing and counteracting this.
Does anyone else on here encounter similar instances? If so, what do you think about it?

Fortunately Im not "friends" on Facebook with many bigots but like you im not proactive but annoyed by it
There are a few bigots on my facebook, and it does piss me off. The problem is that the anonymity of posting online, and the disconnection from reality, means that it's easy to say offensive things and not care about the consequences, and it's also easier to ignore someone calling you out. For example, if I write a long comment in response to someone else's facebook comment, telling them why they shouldn't be using racial slurs, they can just close the webpage and dismiss it, whereas when I do it in person, they can't avoid it so easily.

There are a couple of bigots on my facebook posting shit about Obama's birth certificate, referring to Muslims as "Ragheads" and whatnot. Recently though I had a pointless discussion over some comments with someone from that "Let's burn some Qurans" church (because I live in that city) whom I had not added, and they have since added, which means I'm probably going to be seeing a lot of anti-Islam bullshit from now on.

I think the problem with Facebook is people view it as a foundation for racism. They think it's OK to spit hatred that they wouldn't normally say in the streets. Like you guys, I have had a number of pointless conversations and arguments with hateful individuals (and the fascist groups they belong to), and it's as if I haven't got anywhere. I, however, find this sort of thing very worrying and think it needs to be tackled. I'm doing what I can to be pro-active for now. It may not work, but I don't have any better ideas at the minute. Can anyone help?
