Figures from two articles I've recently come across:

The share of the population that is working fell to its lowest level last year since women started entering the workforce in large numbers three decades ago, a USA TODAY analysis finds.

Only 45.4% of Americans had jobs in 2010, the lowest rate since 1983 and down from a peak of 49.3% in 2000. Last year, just 66.8% of men had jobs, the lowest on record.

...The Daily Ticker's Aaron Task discusses the state of the middle class with Sherle Schwenninger, director of economic growth and American strategy programs at the New America Foundation. Schwenninger's recent report "The American Middle Class Under Stress" has some stunning facts that highlight the struggles the average American is having getting a decent-paying job and keeping up with rising cost of living.

Here are just some of the sobering facts:

-- There are 8.5 million people receiving unemployment insurance and over 40 million receiving food stamps.

-- At the current pace of job creation, the economy won't return to full employment until 2018.

-- Middle-income jobs are disappearing from the economy. The share of middle-income jobs in the United States has fallen from 52% in 1980 to 42% in 2010.

-- Middle-income jobs have been replaced by low-income jobs, which now make up 41% of total employment.

-- 17 million Americans with college degrees are doing jobs that require less than the skill levels associated with a bachelor's degree.

Right, but Obama is a socialist, and socialism is the cause for their strife not capitalism or neoliberalism. Socialism perpetrated by liberals and RINO's obviously why people don't work and of course teh welfare queens.

Thanks NHIA.

Sorry to be lazy and not looking for it in the source, but is the percentage based on all of the population or the population between 18 to pension age?

Must be total population judging by the %.

also

When has capitalism ever strived for full employment? It's downright undesirable for capitalist economists. Must keep NAIRU.

The funny thing about NAIRU is that capitalists tell us that we can all accomplish the American dream, yet even in theory that's impossible. A good lie huh:sleep:.

So according to this, less than half of the country has a job? 50 percent real unemployment?

They're including children, stay-at-home parents, retirees, etc., too - hence the 55%
"unemployment."

We live in interesting times, and you'd think in such an environment, we'd be able to accomplish more...

us workforce is about 160 million people so 49 million unemployed is still a pretty significant chunk

I think this country is a powder keg. I'm probably biased, though.

Wasn't the US supposed to be 'the best damn country in the world'?

Americans should stop lying to themselves. I've seen some classic videos of Max Blumenthal interviewing Tea Partiers at their rallies, one of his prime questions was 'do you have healthcare?'. I think many in the world thought that the US had taken a new turn with electing Obama, but as in turns out every day since his been president - the global view of Americans has probably gone into further decline.

Umm... I'm not from the US, but do have a question regarding this. How is the system still running?!
If these numbers are correct, there should be people starving already.

It is total population and yes the numbers are correct. People are starving in this country though I didn't realize that was a surprise to anyone. People have been starving in the United States for a long time.

Nobody really starves to death, but a good amount of children go hungry enough to be malnourished and unhealthy.
