Claims that the war is about trying to stop the reemergence of the gold standard sounds like a Libertarian conspiracy theory to me.

I dont believe is because of the gold standart itself, but because of countries buying oil with other things than dollars.
Sadam tried to sell oil in euros and we all know what happen.
Chavez suggested the same and there were attempts of counter revolution is Venezuela.
