View Full Version : Mormons on wheels

So something rather unusual happened today. I was running some errands when the car I was in broke down. Before phone calls were being made to get the car to a service center, these Mormon missionaries come up to ask if they could help and of course to talk about Mormonism and whatever. At first I thought of giving them a hard time and asking if they could get God/Joseph Smith whatever to start the car. Of course I smiled and wished them good luck but told them I'd heard their schpeal before and the like.

But then I wondered whether they actually deliberately go up and down the highways looking for broken down cars and talk to people in them who have nothing better to do. I've met mechanics who hire people to basically do this same thing.

Anyway for what it's worth I guess I want to caution anyone else whose car breaks down.

Did they at least fix your car?

If you have any amount of skepticism in your mind then you can easily see through the bullshit of their story.

The best way to troll those types is to pretend you believe in God, but subtly introduce some element they disagree with. If they stick around to argue just get more and more surreal and objectionable until they realise they're being trolled.

I usually steer the conversation towards the unequal status of women in their church, especially if one of them is a woman. I try to test their explanations and look for any mixed messages or lack of resolve in the woman.

Personally, I love talking to Mormons and fundamentalist Christians, they are horrified and theologically speechless after getting an ear full of Gnosticism and Hermetica.

Key points to talk to Mormons about.

There were no horses in North America prior to the Spanish arrival.
Steel weapons were not invented until the 4th century BC.
There is no way a boat from their era could cross the Atlantic Ocean.
What happened to the golden plates?
What was with the magic stones Joseph Smith put in a hat before sticking his head in and translating the golden plates which were in another room.

The list goes on.

I've gone on exchange with Elders before and from my experience they just stop when they see someone in trouble. We were on our way to talk to an investigator when we saw a car pulled on the side with the hood up so we stopped and gave his battery a jump-start. I don't recall if we got his information and the Elders never mentioned talking to him again so I assume he wasn't interested. The main thing is that missionaries are supposed to help and provide service whenever and however possible.

They chose you because you couldn't just get up and leave.

Why would I want to?

If they wanted to help you get your car all fixed and shaped up, who cares? Who cares if they ramble on about Joseph Smith and whatevers? Mormons are pretty nice people and if they wanted to help me fix my broken down car just to talk to me, so be it, as long as the job gets done.

You can only fix the car through Jesus Christ.
