do you guys have any longterm goals?
when i was a bit younger i was much more driven because i was treated by everybody as if i was a fuckin genius or some bs so i dreamt wild but now that i am older i just wanna chill the fuck out and tell people to not meddle with my books and my weed. idk right now i just have as a goal to move to canada and then establish myself stable enough to do whatever i want with my money because i already made peace with the fact that i can;t find anything i would reallly rreally like to do for a living so rather than being all ideological im just gonna whore myself out to the highest bidder and with the least hours if it isnt something more or less morally reprehensible.
my goal right now is to move into canada and work for a bit. i already got my paperwork etc and its a bit exciting. my new boss is gonna send me to toronto, vancouver etc to get drunk with other scientists and talk about quarks. im doing a masters also under him but idk if i wanna do a phd because academia seems horrible and i rather just do computer monkey work and work a normal 40h week shift rather than doing what amounts to 70h
i also publish short stories on the side because i like writing and i have no expectations from it because anybody who thinks writing for a living is generally viable is kidding themselves but maybe someday the material condiutions and the alignment of the planets is right so that whatever shit my degenerate mind produces appeals the masses
I want to live in France or a French speaking country at some point. I'll probably do it when my son is a bit older. I think that traveling a bit will teach him a lot.
One day, I would love to be able to write for a living, but I'll probably just have to accept it will always be a hobby, because my writing isn't that great and I don't like people reading it in case they think it's rubbish haha.
I'm still shooting for a job/career in international travel. I was thinking of maybe being a photographer, independent, and traveling around the world for different magazines like Nat Geo and the like, seeing different places I haven't seen before.

Amazing how simple they get. When I was a kid, I was gonna be an astronaut. Or a multi-millionaire hockey or soccer player. :D

I wanna be the very best.
Like no one ever was.
But really, as a long term goal, I just want to actually finish most of these countless projects that I am so good at starting, but no good at completing.

But I'm not talented, so.

Yeah, this, as far as the category "absolutely unattainable dreams" is concerned.
Short term goals: to successfully participate in the rank and file union and students' action against new legislation on higher education and science (commodification, possible privatization of entire departments and colleges, a new system of fees); to finally graduate from college; to attain at least decent organizational skills concerning my fullfilment of day to day tasks
Mid term goals: try to find a job
Long term goals: bring capitalism down as part of an organized workers' movement :D
Dreams: to write fiction, travel and perform other useful labour when and where needed while not being bothered by consequences of capitalist exploitation and opression (clearly, this ties in with long term goals :)).

I want to be a politician and help the proletarians with their struggles intill we archieve victory.

Then just focus on Exploitation films. :D

That's too overrated today, and won't work.

Short term
-Have my band become a frequently playing band in the local punk scene
-Have much shenanigans occur over summer break
Long Term
-Get a wife (assuming she's into the whole marriage thing because frankly I don't give a shit either way but most people are)
-Find a way to someday visit my host from when I was an exchange student in Russia
that's my goals. they are wildly interesting.
Man, interesting thread...
haven't had any for awhile
"Hopes" and "dreams"? You all make me laugh.
I wish I were joking about that.

What Nic said. Fuck talent. Natural talent just makes you better than most other novices. What it comes down to is working towards it.
I want to be a teacher. English and/or Social Studies. I've managed to fuck this up royally already, however, by managing to fail my intro to teaching class twice in two semesters.
But I'll keep trying. I'm going to sign up for the class either next semester, or the semester after that.

haven't had any for awhileSo hip.
I want to become a historian,or a history teacher at a university,or in a high school.Or to get involved in politics. (thats more likely)
For now il just read and study.I gave up on skiing, although i was pretty good.
Be successful with my band is a long term goal. Not like the rockstar type of successful, but being respected and well known in our field of music would be fcking great. I know the chances are slim, but it's something to keep me going.
Also to find work which I don't despise would be great. Preferably working 'on the road' and seeing lots of different countries and people. I can't see myself going to the same place of work for like 10 or 20 years or something. It would make me severely depressed.
Also maybe one day go to university to study philosophy, but idk if that is a good choice for me. It would result in severe debts and the rate at which uni degrees are becoming increasingly worthless and in no way a guarantee for a well paying job is pretty unsettling.

I want to get at least one degree. Afterwards I'd like to do journalism or go into something academic, I also write screenplays now and then and it I suppose a dream would be to make one professionally (just a short film would be fine). Ultimate dream would be to see some kind of success with my musical talents, as in music I have made being listened to and appreciated outside of just the local area.

Fuck talent. Besides, who says you gotta be 'talented' to make a film or any form of art for that matter.
Nic.
This. The way I see it, most art forms are like playing guitar (I play bass passably well and I'm self taught). You don't have to be naturally inclined to be even moderately successful. All it takes is a lot of drive and energy. Formal training doesn't hurt, but it damned sure ain't necessary.
Anyway, failing the demise of global capitalism, these are my hopes or dreams or whatever.
1) Short term - Get back into school. I really would like to finish my degree, if for no better reason than I've already put too much energy into it to let it slide. That might lead me into teaching history and/or poli-sci as a profession, but that's not a goal in and of itself.
2) Long term - Get an A-class football [North Americans read: soccer] coaching license. Like the OP, I was hailed as some kinda damned genius as a kid and for what it's worth, my intellect is really the attribute of which I'm proudest. I have a hard time believing any professional footy coach currently working is really that much (if at all) smarter than I am... So I don't see why I couldn't do it given the right training.
3) Pie in the sky - I'd love to get enough cash together to supply the seed money for a collectively owned indie/art house movie theatre. It'd be my dream to facilitate the foundation of a place like that, where administrative personnel (bookkeepers, inventory managers, etc) are elected, hiring and firing is done democratically, and the films we screen are determined by collective consensus. And if Explosive Situation and Jimmy Higgins ain't busy doing something else, they're gonna be the first folks I enlist to help.

Oh hell yeah man. And actually, I do know an anarchist who is a theater projectionist... so now all we need is money and a building. I'm buying a lotto ticket right now:D

I might have to buy one as well. There's actually a building available in our area that given a little remodeling might do. The Parkway Speakeasy over there near Laney is still empty so far as I know.

I'd love to have a steady job, don't really care what it is atm, where i could make enough money to have a small place of my own.
Pretty simple dream really but ive no idea how to go from where i am to that. I'll probably have to go back to school at some point and im not sure if i can cope with that yet, 3 years ago i was a much better and stronger person and it's only recently that im making progress toward getting back to that level.

actually it's funny you posted this thread because it wasn't until just a few days ago that I came to the extremely liberating conclusion that everything I want out of life is fairly simple. in less than two years I'll have my bachelor's degree, and then I want to work towards getting a house with my partner. I want a garden, perhaps a few hens, and no less than five cats. that's all really. I don't really have any goals in terms of careers, being a liberal arts major (derp). anything that makes ends meet will suffice.
