When he said "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.", did he mean that if someone didn't work, that person wouldn't get his/her needs?

Or did he think that everyone should get their basic necessities for life, but luxuries would have to be worked for?

I think there were two lines.

"From each according to their abilities; To each according to their work"
"From each according to their abilities; To each according to their need"

Basically, if we use the The Second Internationale's way of using "Socialism" as a phase between Capitalism and Communism(which i do) there would be, after the revolution, from the start be a transition from a work-to-receive, to a money-less post-scarcity society in the final Communist stages.
