Depressing situation... the government accuses the protesters of being egged on by Iran, which might be true of some but is probably not true of most of the protesters, who seem to have been more concerned with the total lack of democracy, economic opportunity and so on.

Bahrain hasIt is similar to Libya and Syria where the State tried to stop the protests by force, but this time, the "West" is notably not siding with the protesters, but seems to be tacitly supporting Saudi imperial ambitions. This should come to no surprise, the Western support for Middle Eastern protests is obviously a cynical move on their part. Bahrain has a government which uses false confessions, torture, organized repression, and an increasingly Orwellian state, but now America and the EU seem content to ignore it because obviously a Sunni monarchic Bahrain is more likely to maintain the country's strong pro-West policies.

This is also worrying for gulf stability, and therefore the survivability of the global economy ... there increasingly seems to be a cold war between Iran and Saudi Arabia, and the conflict in Bahrain has become just another proxy for these two ambitious middle eastern nations. But that creates increasing instability in the whole Gulf area, and could lead to more issues which will drive up oil prices further, and possibly lead to more violence.
