View Full Version : Going to Prague in the summer
So yeah, I'm going to Prague (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prague) in the summer, and I wondered if anyone here has ever been there? What are some must see locations, both political/revolutionairy sites and other cool places?
We already decided we wanted to go to this cool-ass church. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sedlec_Ossuary)
I was there last year but only for one night during my travelling and it seemed like a nice place to stay for a longer time.
Also if you've been there post your travel stories.

You say Prague, and you show a picture of a church in Kutna Hora...?
There's two parts to Czech: one is Prague, which is one big tourist trap, especially in Summer. Full of British lager louts, can't walk down the street without meeting a bunch of guys in wigs playing "Mozart," etc. Worth seeing, though, for the Old Jewish Quarter, the Art Nouveau and Baroque Architecture. Also the "Museum of the Evils of Communist Oppression" or some such title, worth a laugh. Also, the food is very good, even in the tourist areas, and the locals are just nice people when they're not too wrapped up in the capitalist-vs-socialist thing.
Outside of Prague it's a different world. I would check out Tabor, which still has the old architecture from when it was a communist society, back in the Middle Ages.:thumbup1:

i have heard that draught beer is ridiculously cheap, yet it is illegal in Czech law to be drunk in public.
What a cruel state of affairs.

Theoretically, it's illegal in the States to be drunk in public as well. Thing is, you'll never get cited for it unless you've done something else to make an obvious nuisance of yourself, like passing out on a beach, getting into a fight, playing in traffic, streaking, that sort of thing. In other words, as long as you're a well behaved drunk I doubt you'll suffer any consequences. I would imagine it's a similar situation over there.
I used to live and study in Prague. I reccommend drinking outside of the city centre for obvious economic/social reasons - go to Žižkov (Blind Eye/Kapyabara) or Vinohrady for this purpose.
If you want to see tourist things, I think a sunny day in Vyšehrad is best as it's a really beautiful place. For museums and galleries, I think the Kafka museum is well done, the Army museum is pretty interesting (and free). Also take a day trip to Terezín, and see the memorials and Jewish museum (it was an infamous Ghetto that brings home the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia.
Sorry this is pretty short but I don't really know where to begin. If you have any questions or need advice on where to stay etc fire me a PM or post here. Bavde se!

Yeah I know it's not in Prague but we planned it as a daytrip.
Thanks everybody for the tips I'll go look it up. Will def check out this Vyšehrad place, the pics on the interweb look great. We will be staying in a youth-hostel, which is cheap and pretty comfy actually.
What is the best place to go out if your looking for some alternative culture? Like, rock and metal and punk/squatter bars/venues? I'm not really a club person.
