On April 20th, 2011, on the first year anniversary of the oil disaster resulting from an explosion at British Petroleum's Deep Water Horizon oil rig, a group of individuals answered a call-out made by Rising Tide by partially or completely disabling fourteen gas station in neighborhoods around San Francisco for an estimated total closure time of over thirty-seven hours. These actions were undertaken with very little damage to property and no violence towards individuals.

Contrary to news reports, Shell stations were not targeted specifically; stations of all kinds, including BP-owned Arco stations were disabled because all are equally guilty of destroying the planet and human life in their pursuit of profits.

Some have denounced our actions as radical or criminal ones, but when oil companies continue to destroy our planet and its future, when BP can decimate an entire ecosystem and an entire region's economy with its negligence and blatant lack of concern for general human welfare, when wars are fought for oil and fueled by oil, it is obvious who the real criminals are.

Although we acted in solidarity with Rising Tide, the group has distanced themselves from our actions. We ask Rising Tide, if they do not endorse actions which cause so little damage and harm no life, what steps are they willing to take to accomplished our shared goals, with the stakes as high as they are?

The tactics used were chosen because they are low-risk and high-impact, as well as being easy to duplicate; no special tools or knowledge and only a small group of people are needed. We disabled the stations by activating, then removing the emergency shut off switches and/or by locking the fuel hoses to the opposite side of the pump with chains and locks. We also left fliers advertising the political nature of our intent. Few of us had any sort of experience in this sort of direct action.

Others who are willing to take action against the extraction and consumption of fossil fuels will be inspired by our actions and either emulate our tactics or create their own to shut down gas stations in San Francisco, around the country, and around the world. We again emphasis the ease at which we were able to disable fourteen gas stations with simple tools (screwdrivers, chains, padlocks, and superglue), a handful of non-associated individuals and no expertise.

The stakes are too high, our species and all others on the planet will perish if we continue to do nothing!

Rise up and act against the corporate oil oligarchs!

We will continue our assault and call on others to join us!
