A ninth grade algebra teacher was suspended from a Texas school district after making offensive comments to a Muslim student in front of the entire class.

"The teacher told the student that 'I bet you're grieving,'" the mother of a student in the same class told ABC13 (http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/story?section=news/local&id=8109997). "And she basically looked at him and said what are you talking about? And he said I heard about your uncle's death and she said wow, because she understood that he was referring about Osama bin Laden being killed and was racially profiling her."

She added that the teacher "just kind of smirked and giggled and walked away" after the Muslim student ended up crying over the comments.

I was told my uncle Osama died too yesterday and today and I'm not even Arab or Muslim, I'm half-Indian and half-Italian.

How old is 9th grade in the US?

Also...notice the fear in this article. Very worrying. I am glad I do not live there.

9th grade is usually 14 years old. Very glad this was reported and that the scumbag teacher was suspended. I'm also proud of this young girl for standing up to bullying from someone in a position of authority.

I live in Texas (albeit in the very south, which is overwhelmingly Hispanic), and this does not surprise me in the slightest. I expected the hyper-patriotic hysteria to bring out the worst in otherwise ordinary people as it is, so to hear outright racists unashamedly spew out their bile on even innocent kids during a time when such is all but acceptable is par the course, ESPECIALLY so in Texas.

My friend's brother also had this happen to him yesterday and he's a 12 year old Hindu boy.
While I feel neutral to happy that Osama is gone, it's sad to see a gain in the struggle against religious extremists accompanied by equally fanatical racism.

Racism doesnt shock me. People are so ignorant it's not even funny. Good for the school board for suspension, I hope she goes to prison

Fire the teacher. Simple as that.

The American public has always been cruel in this regard...so as long as they are able to get a cheap laugh they do not care who they hurt.

I've mentioned before on here that I'm in the process of becoming a teacher, so as you might suspect this hits quite a nerve with me. I'm ashamed but considering the location, not entirely surprised.

My sister had a similar incident, not with race but with the age. She telling the kids in 8th grade that "the college students had no reason to celebrate", and they we're "too young to know what happened". Talking about my age group 18 to 25 year olds.

If anything we we're the one's who grew up not being able to figure out what's going to happen in the future, and scared of this "boogeyman" because the older people made it a media scare and made all of us fear him. We grew up in post-9/11 with all this heightened security shit and terrorist threats that changed the way the world was viewed because of it.

The teacher's need to stop with the racist shit also I can't believe they would do something like that to 14 year olds. At least that's how old I was in 9th grade.

USA USA USA
That's pretty much the only thing that runs through their mind. The raging boner that they get when they airstrike poor countries, you know, for humanitarian reasons of course. And this is a great USA, USA, USA chant moment of course.

Now I remember when this first came out. I was fairly young and I asked people why we should do this. They answered because Saddam was killing his people. I asked won't bombing Iraq just kill more Iraqi people. They answered who gives a fuck about his people. Ahh Elementary school, you can always count on children to speak what their parents think.

Ah, it would have been awesome if she replied "Because of Uncle Osama, it's likely that communist Obama will win the next presidential election"

Good on her for standing up for her self!

I'm actually surprised they did anything. Texas is one of the most reactionary states in the US.

Dude this is BS. I hope he gets fired and ends up in a homeless shelter bunking with 5 devout Muslims. Lets see him make a wise crack then. He'd get his ass whooped faster than you can call Obama a Communist.

I can't believe we still have such rampant racism here. It feels like the whole world is progressing and fast leaving us in the dust.
