What should they say?
Most of them react in a negative way,but these people are usually right-wingers who actually don't know anything about communism.
Although,i have nice conversations with communist and generally people interested in politics.
Of course,if you tell them you are a communist (ML ie old guard) and engage in conversation with them defending your stance with good arguments, people don't have much problems with that.
Although,if you would go in all: "Kill capitalists rrrnnnnghh communism rules!" people probably,if not certainly, won't be overjoyed.

Oh and,ML - Marxism Leninism.

I have interesting debates in history class when I tell them.. So It's like 30 Cappies vs. 1 Commie..

Yesterday the teacher was bringing up the Human Nature argument, and I said "Stop doing that" and he's like "STOP PUTTING WORDS IN MY MOUTH!!!!11"

Well I am not a Marxist-Leninist, although I will reply from a general Leftist perspective:
I am regularly told that I hate America and hate freedom. I shit you not. So being against USA foreign policy and economic system and wishing to improve it for all, so that all may prosper, means I hate America? Then I am also called a racist because I am not a white nationalist opposed to all other forms of culture and lifestyle. Apparently I hate white people because I am racially tolerant, promote equality for all, and wish for people regardless of race/sexual orientation to live in peace. You just can't make this stuff up. :(

If people don't know that you're a communist without you saying it, then you're not a communist.

I don't usually tell people my political views unless pressed. It's not good conversation, particularly with people I barely know. I like to focus on other constructive topics like stupid jokes or basically what we do in Chit Chat.

At a christmas eve at my sisters, the grandfather of my brother-in-law and me discussed politics and I explained my views: working class rule, economy that should be run in the interests of the people, etc. Then he asked, somewhat shocked but also surprised: "But you're not a COMMUNIST, are you?" and I said "well yes, yes I am". My whole family (who is very much aware of my politics and is largely sympathetic) had a collective gasp that moment as the old man was not exactly a red and tried to nuance it directly with stuff like "but he doesn't like Stalin!".

While he didn't talk to me anymore about the subject that evening, later on I was told that he did respect me for having a clear opinion and being open about it.

He's a cool guy really :)

I wouldn't say I'm a Marxist-Leninist, but everyone knows I'm a commie... I made myself some red-duct-taped communist glasses. I can't help being one of those in-your-face-leftists. Some people take to trying to argue with me. Some people insist that I am obviously secretly Russian. Some people roll with it. =] . Most people just have to deal with it because they can't argue because I know more about the subjects than they do. I think some people probably respect me for being sorta fearless in my self-expression. Some people probably think I'm annoying. And I bet I am. But that's ok.

My extended family and my parents friends for the most part don't know. I have to stop myself from calling anyone comrade around them, lol. I dunno, my parents are annoying enough to argue with every second, I don't need a whole other host of old people who grew up being spoonfed cold war propaganda attacking me and probably judging my character.

Reactions I've had:
"Cool."
"Why do you side with a northerner party?"
"What's that?"
"Fascist!" (from the head of local cell of Socialist Youth and an anarcho-syndicalist I know)
"Why?"

Although, I got the Communist Party has a couple of t-shirts I got when joining. So, some were tipped off already (at least, during non-cold months). I like wearing them, as most people in the south-east think that the Communist Party is defunct.

My half-Cuban and half-Venezuelan friends wasn't to thrilled to see pictures of Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro but eventually he said it made a lot of sense and asked his mom (for the fun of it) "Maybe we should all be Socialists?" You'll be surprised to find out how open people are to the idea.

Well, I'm not a ML, but often people can't seem to grasp that I'm an anarchist communist and tell me that anarchism and communism are incompatible.
