Could a united front between the Communists and the Social Democrats really have happened?
Would the SPD have been likely to go for it?
Could it have stopped Hitler?

A KPD-SPD united front would have stood a very realistic chance of defeating the Nazis. At almost every stage a unified bloc of the two parties would outnumber or at least match the Nazis in the Reichstag whilst had they worked together on the streets there would have been genuine hope.
However there were many things that made it unlikely. Both the SPD and KPD seemed to see one another as only marginally worse than the Nazis. Moscow, as ever, didn't help the situation with the whole 'social fascists' thing that essentially made a united front impossible.
Later the SPD would blame the KPD whilst German communists would blame the SPD for the failure to form a united front. Both are equally to blame.
