Chain Gang

I hear somethin' sayin'

(Hooh! aah!) (hooh! aah!)
(Hooh! aah!) (hooh! aah!)

(Well, don't you know)
That's the sound of the men working on the chain ga-a-ang
That's the sound of the men working on the chain gang

All day long they're singin'
(Hooh! aah!) (hooh! aah!)
(Hooh! aah!) (hooh! aah!)

(Well, don't you know)
That's the sound of the men working on the chain ga-a-ang
That's the sound of the men working on the chain gang

All day long they work so hard
Till the sun is goin' down
Working on the highways and byways
And wearing, wearing a frown
You hear them moanin' their lives away
Then you hear somebody sa-ay

That's the sound of the men working on the chain ga-a-ang
That's the sound of the men working on the chain gang

Can't ya hear them singin'
Mm, I'm goin' home one of these days
I'm goin' home see my woman
Whom I love so dear
But meanwhile I got to work right he-ere

(Well, don't you know)
That's the sound of the men working on the chain ga-a-ang
That's the sound of the men working on the chain gang

All day long they're singin', mm
My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my work is so hard
Give me water, I'm thirsty
My work is so hard

A Change Is Gonna Come

I was born by the river in a little tent
Oh and just like the river I've been running ever since
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will

It's been too hard living but I'm afraid to die
Cause I don't know what's up there beyond the sky
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will

I go to the movie and I go downtown
Somebody keep telling me don't hang around
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will

Then I go to my brother
And I say brother help me please
But he winds up knocking me
Back down on my knees

Ohhhhhhhhh.....

There been times that I thought I couldn't last for long
But now I think I'm able to carry on
It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will

Wonderful World

Don't know much about history,
don't know much biology.
Don't know much about a science book,
don't know much about the french I took.
But I do know that I love you,
and I know that if you love me, too,
what a wonderful world this would be. Don't know much about geography,
don't know much trigonometry.
Don't know much about algebra,
don't know what s slide rule is for.
But I know that one and one is two,
and if this one could be with you,
what a wonderful world this would be.
I don't claim to be an 'A' student,
but I'm tryin' to be.
For maybe by being an 'A'-student, baby,
I can win your love for me.
Don't know much about history,
don't know much biology.
Don't know much about a science book,
don't know much about the french I took.
But I do know that I love you,
and I know that if you love me, too,
what a wonderful world this would be.

You Send Me

Darling you send me
I know you send me
Darling you send me
Honest you do, honest you do, honest you do, oh
You thrill me
I know you, (you, you) thrill me
Darling you thrill me
Honest you do
At first I thought it was infatuation
That has lasted so long
But now I find myself wanting
To marry you and take you home
Ohhh you send me
I know you send me
I know you send me
Honest you do
Whoa whenever I'm with you
I know, I know, I know that I'm near you
Umm-humm, umm-humm
Honest you do honest you do
I know I know I know when you hold me,
I know I know wooo whenever you kiss me
Honest you do
At first I thought it was infatuation
But it has lasted so long
But now I find myself wanting
To marry and take you home
I know I know I know you send me
I know you send me
Ohh you send me

Only Sixteen

She was only sixteen, only sixteen
I loved her so
But she was too young to fall in love
And I was too young to know

We'd laugh and we'd sing
And do the little things
That made my heart glow
But she was too young to fall in love
And I was too young to know

Why did I give my heart so fast
It never will happen again
But I was a mere lad of sixteen
I've aged a year since then

She was only sixteen, only sixteen
With eyes that would glow
But she was too young to fall in love
And I was too young to know

(Then why did you give your heart so fast)
Oh, it never will happen again
(But you were a mere lad of sixteen)
I've aged a year since then

She was only sixteen, only sixteen
With eyes that would glow
But she was too young to fall in love
And I was too young to know
But she was too young to fall in love
And I was too young to know

As it is May Day I have collected up and been listening to various tunes on the theme. Here are a few versions of the Early Middle English song Sumer Is I-Cumen In or Summer Is A-Coming In as we'd call it now:

GJvF9xucG90

ZWWEHAswpFI

Middle English:

Sumer is icumen in,
Lhude sing cuccu!
Groweþ sed and bloweþ med

And springþ þe wde nu,
Sing cuccu!
Awe bleteþ after lomb,
Lhouþ after calue cu.
Bulluc sterteþ, bucke uerteþ,
Murie sing cuccu!
Cuccu, cuccu, wel þu singes cuccu;

Ne swik þu nauer nu.
Pes:

Sing cuccu nu. Sing cuccu.
Sing cuccu. Sing cuccu nu!

Standard Modern English:

Summer has come in,
Loudly sing, Cuckoo!
The seed grows and the meadow
blooms
And the wood springs anew,
Sing, Cuckoo!
The ewe bleats after the lamb
The cow lows after the calf.
The bullock stirs, the buck farts,
Merrily sing, Cuckoo!
Cuckoo, cuckoo, well you sing,
cuckoo;
Don't you ever stop now,

Sing cuckoo now. Sing, Cuckoo.
Sing Cuckoo. Sing cuckoo now!

nG-0s5BnO-0

Sumer is Icumen in,Loudly sing, cuckoo!
Grows the seed and blows the mead,
And springs the wood anew;
Sing, cuckoo!
Ewe bleats harshly after lamb,
Cows after calves make moo;
Bullock stamps and deer champs,
Now shrilly sing, cuckoo!
Cuckoo, cuckoo
Wild bird are you;
Be never still, cuckoo!

ZWWEHAswpFI

And lastly a humourous take on the theme, Summer Is A Coming In sung by Nat King Cole.

TTgDxR3AIg8

Cuckoo singin' his heart heart out
Robin raisin' a din
What is so rare
As June in the air
Summer is a-comin' in

Old man goin' out fishin'
Puttin' worms in a tin
Look at him go
So easy and slow
Summer is a-comin' in

Wha's all the hurly burly
There's a noise that's mighty queer
Could it be school's out early
Could it be laughter I hear

Feel a strange kind'o stirrin'
Something's bound to begin
The world is dressed in her Sunday best
Summer is a-comin' in (BREAK)

What is so rare
As June in the air
Summer is a-comin' in (BREAK)

Look at him go
So easy and slow
Summer is a-comin' in

What's all the hur-ly burly
There's a noise that's mighty queer
Could it be school's out early
Could it be laughter I hear

Feel a strange kind'o stirrin'
Somethin's bound to begin
The world is dressed in her Sunday best
Summer is a-co-om-in' in...

Gee, I'd like to go fishin'

Now I'm a union man
Amazed at what I am
I say what I think
That the company stinks
Yes I'm a union man.

When we meet in the local hall
I'll be voting with them all
With a hell of a shout
It's out brothers out
And the rise of the factory's fall.

Oh you don't get me I'm part of the union
You don't get me I'm part of the union
You don't get me I'm part of the union
Till the day I die, till the day I die.

As a union man I'm wise
To the lies of the company spies
And I don't get fooled
By the factory rules
'Cause I always read between the lines.

And I always get my way
If I strike for higher pay
When I show my card
To the Scotland Yard
This what I say.

Oh you don't get me I'm part of the union
You don't get me I'm part of the union
You don't get me I'm part of the union
Till the day I die, till the day I die.

Before the union did appear
My life was half as clear
Now I've got the power
To the working hour
And every other day of the year.

So though I'm a working man
I can ruin the government's plan
Though I'm not too hard
The sight of my card
Makes me some kind of superman.

Oh you don't get me I'm part of the union
You don't get me I'm part of the union
You don't get me I'm part of the union
Till the day I die, till the day I die.

It's a mighty hard row that my poor hands have hoed
My poor feet have traveled a hot dusty road
Out of your Dust Bowl and Westward we rolled
And your deserts were hot and your mountains were cold

I worked in your orchards of peaches and prunes
I slept on the ground in the light of the moon
On the edge of the city you'll see us and then
We come with the dust and we go with the wind

California, Arizona, I harvest your crops
Well its North up to Oregon to gather your hops
Dig the beets from your ground, cut the grapes from your vine
To set on your table your light sparkling wine

Green pastures of plenty from dry desert ground
From the Grand Coulee Dam where the waters run down
Every state in the Union us migrants have been
We'll work in this fight and we'll fight till we win

It's always we rambled, that river and I
All along your green valley, I will work till I die
My land I'll defend with my life if it be
Cause my pastures of plenty must always be free

Through deserts so hot and mountains so cold

Well I've wandered all over your green growing land

Jarrow Song

My name is Geordie McIntyre
An' the Bairns don't even have a fire
So the wife says "Geordie, go to London Town!"
And if they don't give us half a chance
Don't even give us a second glance
Then Geordie, with my blessings, burn them down

Come on follow the Geordie boys
They'll fill your heart with joy
They're marching for their freedom now
Come on follow the Jarrow lads
They'll make your heart feel glad
They're saying now, yes now is the hour

My name is little Billy White
And I know what's wrong and I know what's right
An' the wife says "Geordie, go to London Town!"
An' if they don't give us a couple of bob
Won't even give you a decent job
Then Geordie, with my blessings, burn them down

Come on follow the Geordie boys
They'll fill your heart with joy
They're marching for their freedom now
Come on follow the Jarrow lads
You try and make your heart feel glad
They're saying now, yes now is the hour

But I can hear them, an' I can feel them
An' it's as just as if they were here today
I can see them, I can feel them
An' I'm thinking nothing's changed much today

Not all came here to stay that way and die
But they would come and hit you in the eye
Now's the time to realize that time goes on
Nothin' changes, changes, changes

But I can feel them, I can see them
An' it's as just as if they were here today
I can feel them and I need them
An' I'm thinking nothing's changed much today

Not all live here to stay that way and die
But they would come and hit you in the eye
Now's the time to realize that time goes on
And nothin' changes, changes, changes

My name is little Alan Price
I tried to be nice all of my life
But I'm afraid that up to date it doesn't work
Because when you lay some money down
The people try to put you down
Now where do I stand, either side or not

Come on follow this Geordie boy
He'll try and fill your heart with joy
We're marching for our freedom now
Come on follow this Jarrow lad
You try and make your heart feel glad
We're sayin' it now, yes now is the hour

in spain, english, french and german

(Including background noises caused by bombing and related power outages during the recording.)

R4ExkGrnUzo

And just because he's human,
he doesn't like a pistol to his head,
he wants no servants under him
and no boss over his head.
So left, two, three.
So left, two, three.
to the work, that we must do.
March on in the workers united front,
for you are a worker too.

Tu es un ouvrier - oui !
viens avec nous, ami, n'ai pas peur !
Nous allons vers la grande union
de tous les vrais travailleurs.
Marchons au pas,
Marchons au pas,
camarades, vers notre front!

Drum links, zwei, drei
Drum links, zwei, drei!
Wo dein Platz, Genosse, ist!
Reih' dich ein in die Arbeitereinheitsfront,
Weil du auch ein Arbeiter bist.

Two version of the Gaelic folksong about the travel of Godred ''Gorrie'' Crovan's galley from the Isle of Man to Islay. Godred Crovan is known as Gofraid mac meic Arailt in old Irish Gaelic, and was what people call a ''Norse-Gael'', people of mixed Norse and Gaelic heritage, who make up the population of the Hebrides.

I have never heard that before, I liked the use of first lines of the Heike especially. :)

And, on a related note, here is the old sutra painted that got painted on poor old Hoichi's body:

The Kabuki play 'Kanjincho', like many Kabuki plays is based upon a Noh play. The play it is based on is called 'Ataka'. It is connected to the Heike monogatari, as it features both Minamoto no Yoshitsune and the faithful yamabushi Benkei.

Now, I am watching as well as listening to this next track. It is from the Kathakali retelling of the Mahabharata, a Sanskrit epic telling of the Kurukshetra war and Krishna's revelation to Arjuna (in the Bhagavad Gita, ''the song of god''). Kathakali is an old dance form from 17th century Kerala, the movements match the music almost perfectly, and much emphasis is put on the natyam (facial expressions), nrithram (the movement of legs, arms and the body) and nrithyam (hand gestures).

Wasn't Born To Follow

Oh I'd rather go and journey
Where the diamond crescent's glowing and
Run across the valley
Beneath the sacred mountain
And Wander through the forest
Where the trees have leaves of prisms
And break the light in colors
That no-one knows the names of
And when it's time I'll go and wait
Beside a legendary fountain
Till I see your form reflected
In its clear and jeweled waters
And if you think I'm ready
You may lead me to the chasm
Where the rivers of our vision
Flow into one another
I will watch her dive beneath
The white cascading waters
She may beg she may plead
She may argue with her logic
And then mention all the things I'll lose
That really have no value
In the end she will surely know
I wasn't born to follow
