I have heard recently that the Russian Communist Party is regaining strength and that many Russians feel that they were better off under Communism. What is the status of the party? Is it really Communist? What is everyones general feelings on the former Soviet Union? It seemsto me like it definately had its ups and downs but I really dont' know much beyond the Soviets politics beyond Lenin and Stalin.

As far as I know, many Leninist activists are attracted to this party because of it's size and because it dominated Russia for so many years. But it's dominated by bureaucracy and it's leaders from what I've heard had even nationalists quotes, not very pleasant.
So it's a workers party, but it won't be very Socialist if there wouldn't be a change from below. Many districts in Russia are ruled by the CP, and apperantly there isn't that great of a difference.

The KPRF is not communist. It is a national chauvinist party which openly supports the market economy. The only difference between it today and before 1991 is that it OPENLY supports a market system. Otherwise it still shares the overriding concern for a Russian Empire and continues to fight for the interests of the elite while giving empty rhetoric to the masses. There are other Russian parties. There is one maoist party that I've found which is connected to MIM. And there are a couple of Leninist-Stalinist parties. Some seem kinda revolutionary but most just want a return to the old Soviet Union. Here are links to three of them http://www.bolshevick.narod.ru/enproj/eindexf.htm

there are many more parties and organizations.

I do not know enough about KPRF to call them 'national-chauvanist'. Anyway, in elections the leftist parties tend to go into one single KPRF block. There is elections coming this Winter and then a general election early next year I think.
In my opinion the most attractive party is one you listed there; VKPB. They are a Leninist-Stalinist party, anti-revisionist, internationalist and patriotic party.
I wish the KPRF success since at least they are anti-American.
