Whilst the Communist party remains in power it basically functions like a regular right of centre party would in the rest of Europe.

Belarus is probably closer to a remnant of the USSR. It too is a terrible place to live and is amongst Europe's poorest countries.

The communist system can't be judged by capitalist standards, food and clothing and quality of life are the standards, not money. It takes a while to force an entire nation back into wage slavery and feudalism

There are rumors of loose nukes in Transnistria. Anyone up for a field trip?

Give me 20 clones of myself, $10-100 million, an SS-18 and I'll destroy capitalism in the USA overnight.

Which of these are you suggesting precedes the other, exactly?

'Sides, if you think that Moldova is a Soviet remnant, you're wanting to see Transnistria (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transnistria). Strange place, sure enough, strange place.

You are correct that Belarus is closer to a remnant of the USSR. However, you are definitely wrong when you say it is a terrible place to live and is amongst Europe's poorest countries. It's the richest of the former Soviet countries and has an unemployment rate of only 3% or so.

Yeah, Transnistria is like going back to 1991. Hell they haven't bothered changing their flag or coat of arms as your wiki link shows.

Though I'm sure policy wise it is like the party in Moldova. Communist in name only and for convenience. Though Moldova is at least internationally recognized, Transnitria I believe isn't.

Neither of the Communist Parties in Transnistria is actually in power (although, their candidate got second-most votes in the, let's say, suspicious presidential election). I don't think they (the government) actually claim to be communists either, but use the symbolism.

It must be really nice to live in an East European Russian-dominated poor non-recognized "nation" governed corruptly and by fraud (hey, Smirnov won local elections by more than 100% of the votes) by far-right authoritarian nationalists, followed by conservative pseudo-communists (à la CP of Russia)

For such a poor country, the local soccer team in Transnistria, FC Sheriff Tiraspol, has a sweet-ass stadium:

Also found this bit interesting and mildly humorous:

UPDATE : As of March 2011 - people with non-CIS passports ( UK, in this case ) are still being asked for $100+ bribes for entry. The border guards remain corrupt, and are happy to make visitors who are not willing to hand over ALL their hard currency walk back to the Ukrainian border and try to flag down a bus back to Odessa.

Except Moldova sort of lacks this, too, thanks to Transnistria packing up and leaving with 60% of the country's industry for the sake of a tiny minority (they're a plurality even in Transnistria) of Russian colonists.

Its as much a Communist Party as Tony Blair's New Labour was Maoist. Basically its a nationalist Party that wants to orientate towards Russia. There is a huge ethnic divide in Moldova between Romanians and Russians, or to put it more correctly those who look towards Moldova and those who look towards Russia.

Moldova's CP is basically oriented towards "Third Way" neoliberal economics and political model; they cannot even be called "euro-Communists" or "Bukharinites" for that matter. Actually one would have hard time trying to distinguish them from modern SPD or Labour Party in Britain.

So a small nation that was once part of a larger one that had seven shades of shit knocked out of its economy and didn't have much to begin with is poor. Have I missed a detail that would make this surprising? Is the place made out of diamonds and unicorn shit or something?
