I've heard the argument many times. I'm not saying it's false but how exactly does this happen? There were wars before money was invented.

Most wars were an attempt at the primitive accumulation of capital/wealth. During the long course of history, markets have been cornered, resources secured and what not. So wars are about capital trying to maintain it's accumulation of capital either by solving the crisis of accumulation/over-production (through the process of destroying infrastructure and/or weapon manufacture) or to free up new markets for new investment.

Material conditions dictate historical action.
Acquisition of wealth/land/commercial power is at the center of all wars, pretty much always.
