An interesting film: classic western but with a revolutionary twist.

IMDB gives it 7.7 stars (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067140/). Anyone seen it?

I watched it last night and thought it was really good. It's long though, around 2 hrs, and there are a lot of slow scenes so probably not the best film for those looking for a fast-paced movie.

Discuss. Or go watch it. Then discuss. :redstar2000:

I've seen it as I am a major "Spaghetti Western" and "Zapata film" affectionado.

I think it is an underrated and misunderstood film in many ways; it has been characterised as right-wing or conservative when in fact it is a Leftist criticism of the revolutionary movement and not anti-revolutionary but anti-naivety in regards to revolutionas, hence Mao's quote at the begining.

Incidently I prefered Damiano Damiani's 'A Bullet For The General'/'Quien Sabe' (starring the famous Italian communist Gian Maria Volonet as El Chuncho) to this film, though I do think this is a great film with a great soundtrack that I listen to a fair bit; my favourite tracks being "I Figli Morti' and 'Mesa Verde'.
Other "Zapata Westerns" I'd suggest are the films 'The Mercenary'/A Professional Gun' and 'Vamos A Matar Companeros' by the communist director Sergio Corbucci and the films 'Five Man Army' and 'Tepepa'.

The semi-Zapata films 'The Big Gundown' and 'Run, Man Run' by Sergio Sollima are very great. As is his other film in the Spaghetti Western genre 'Face To Face' (not to be confused with the other great film of that name (in the Anglophone world) by Ingmar Bergman).

I'd definitely recommend it. Especially if you've seen and liked other spaghetti westerns

'Tepepa' is a great film too. And my favourite might be 'A Bullet For The General', hence my alias and avatar.:)

'Five Man Army', a lot of Bud Spencer and Terrence Hill spags (such as the Trinity films and 'Aces High', 'Boots Hill', 'God Forgives... I don't' et cetera) and '100 Rifles'; 'Villa Rides' and 'Pancho Villa' (all Zapata Western). Other Spags on there are 'Renegade Gun', 'Any Gun Can Play'; Sergio Leone's 'A Fistful of Dollars', 'For A Few Dollars More', 'Once Upon A Time In The West' and 'My Name Is Nobody' (a film partly by Sergio Leone which isn't as famous as his others) and 'Django' and 'Minnesota Clay' by Corbucci. I'm not sure if 'The Great Silence' (a great film) or my favourite Spag 'Keoma' are on there but it wouldn't hurt to look.

Unfortunately the spaghetti western subgenre isn't one I've explored much. I'm familiar with a few of the classics (like the Man With No Name trilogy, Django, etc.) but I don't know much beyond that. Cinemageddon has a pretty big selection, though, so someday I plan on catching up.

A very good film, though not as excellent as The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly or Once Upon a Time in the West; though it is certainly more political.

I watched it last night actually with some friends. Good movie. Apparently there's a similar movie that's the same premise or at least with an IRA guy hiding out in Mexico, and helping some Mexican Revolutionaries. I think it's call The Mercenary or something like that?

Yep, The Mercenary is the other one. By the dates, Sergio Leone took the premise from The Mercenary.
