What are the good history forums? They don't necessarily have to be specifically leftist, although a forum dedicated to leftist historiography would be great, but at least something open to leftist thought.History.com seems like fluff and way too much stuff about "ancient astronauts" and assorted bilge. I have spent time on Historium. It was somewhat interesting but it seemed a bit odd. Many of the posters seem intelligent and thoughtful but there seems to be a big interest in Guenonist "Traditionalism" and various eccentric right wing theologies. Its not racist at all but there does seem to be a weird interest in "the origins of the Aryan race" and "whether or not the Germans are really Iranians" stuff like that.

I was wondering what people might recommend?

BTW, I'm not dissing the Revleft history section, its quite good, even though I haven't participated in it much.

BTW again, I realised I probably should have put this in the History section.

Total War forums have an interesting history section, but it is for a game. I stumbled in there to aid with Gothic linguistics so I seem to be aiding with a game mod they are creating!

Personally, I think most history forums are a little popularist, I'm quite tempted to create a forum myself.

You are right about Historium. While they frequently discuss leftist topics, they read only from bourgeois historians. After a while I got bored with them because they accepted everything they read.

I personally visit these three history forums now:

Ancient Roman Empire Forums (http://www.unrv.com/forum/index.php?&CODE=00): Talks about Romans. The people are nice, and they have good discussions on politics, military, religion and other such topics. They are also not confined to Roman talks, and I have actually seen people like Ho Chi Minh being discussed in the forum. It is one of my favorite sites to visit.

Axis History Forums (http://forum.axishistory.com/index.php): These guys talk about the Third Reich. They are way to advanced for me, and so I don't really post much. However, they have a nice section on the DDR military if you want to check it out.

World War II Forums (http://www.ww2f.com/): This is a nice site, although like the AHF, they tend to talk about war a lot, and ignore everything else. But it is a nice site to visit every once in a while.

Judging from the suggestions so far, I reckon you should participate more in the history section of Rev Left :).

There is also the history forum on LibCom.org (http://libcom.org/forums)

and the history forum on Revolutionary Forums.

Let's keep it left :thumbup1:

AHF is ok there are some really solid posters there and the like but like most Axis based historical forums you get a lot of nutjobs and Nazi Apologists. Most are pretty easy to spot others like to obfuscate their position by retreating quickly while throwing random facts.

I do enjoy their reenactment section and some of their boards provide some good info on little know parts of the Third Reich though they tend to be more militarily focused and rather superficial in their analysis of the Third Reich domestically.

Hey, that "Warning you're being monitored" announcement when you log on to the site is a weird one.

http://www.thehistoryforum.com/forum/

It is a sister site to a UK politics forum, a general politics forum & the Soviet-Empire forum. A lot of overlap with members. Not horribly active but what can you expect from a history forum? :p
