Eugene?, New Orleans?, Detroit?, Northern Cali? Alaska?

Perhaps even outside of the US.

If you don't mind selling all your shit, and having no house to call your own, there is a great website that will hook you up with hosts who need helpers, usually on farms, vineyards, ships etc. around the whole world, including the USA. Problem is you don't get paid but they give you food and a bed, and it's a great way to meet other travellers and just have time to (forgive the cliché) 'find yourself', and you can move between them when your stay is up or you're bored of a place.

Yeah, I've done a lot of traveling and met a lot of people. I've gotten rid of anything that didn't fit into a pack five or six times in the last ten years or so. I don't think WWOOFing and similar activities would be appropriate for where I want to be in the next several years as I'm trying to get away from vagrancy (*1) being a full time occupational option. I know what I need to do and it doesn't involve traveling, this thread is just a giant complaint by me.

I want to help people and live some place nice- with hardwood floors and interesting architecture and I want it to be home for more than a year. I'd like to have a place that holds memories again like the places I grew up as a kid. I want to go back to college and get a degree that will yield a job that I can live on and live with. I have no idea what that degree will be in and it's kept me from going back.

Ok so basically I need to find a place near a college here where I'm at and just go back and start taking classes.

Sounds like the website is a conspiracy to violate labor laws.

Don't come to NorCal, or any other Cal for that matter. The whole damned state is in the toilet economically speaking. I've been here two years and have only been able to get part time and temporary work. It's a disaster, doubly so if you wanna go into a helping field (which it sounds like you do) like social work or education. Governor DooDoo Brown is busy slashing spending and basically talking about ending bennies for public workers or just getting rid of the workers all together.

For my money, Austin sounds exactly like what you're looking for... Even if Texas is 53rd (behind Puerto Rico and American Samoa) in social welfare spending.

That would sound like a sweet deal to me if i was on the cusp of homelessness.

If he's looking for jobs while having a decent town, come to Omaha. Omaha has the fifth-lowest unemployment rate among the top 200 populated cities in the U.S. (or so I read!) Lincoln, which is in the same state, is number one, although it's not as a fun city (only an hour away from Omaha). IIRC, a lot of the best employment rates are in the mid-sized midwest/great plains cities (Omaha, Lincoln, Des Moines, Milwaukee, etc.)

That's about six months in Laos

I'll probably start a thread on this soon, with all my research etc, see what ya'll think.

Right, well I'd imagine things aren't too bad in Austin either. Texas and Alaska have been pretty well insulated against the recession primarily because there's so much oil money propping up the economy. There are certain industries that actually benefit from recessions as it were. Alcohol, pharmaceuticals, oil, organized crime...

Yeah. When I was looking up the most employed cities, I was wondering why so many cities in Texas were doing well. Now it all makes sense.

I'd say Nor Cal, just don't move out to the valley. Every big town here and everything in between is just in the shitter right now. Only freakin' job you can get out here is at Kohl's, McDonald's, or Starbucks. You know, basically stacking shelves, flipping burgers, and saying "Hello how may I help you".
