Grave of the Fireflies (Takahata, 1988) is fucking dope. It's a tragic story of an orphaned brother and sister attempting to survive alone in the bombed out ashes of Kobe during the closing days of WWII. It's probably one of the most moving pieces of animated cinema I've ever seen and a damned fine antiwar statement to boot.

Metropia (Saleh, 2009) ain't bad either, but for totally different reasons. The plot and voice acting, IMO, are only average to slightly above average. However, the visual aesthetic is incredible. I'm thinking that there are probably going to be at least three or four other films that cop the artistic technique until the next goût du jour rolls around.

^This one. Despite Keanu Reeves, it's for me the second best adaptation of a Phillip K. Dick novel behind Bladerunner. For the record, rotoscoping is a technique where animators trace each cell of a live action film and then superimpose the animation over the top of the original live action. So, technically it's both. Waking Life (Linklater, 2001) uses the technique as well, but I'd only watch that if you're looking for a rudimentary introduction to philosophy. Otherwise, you probably won't find it very entertaining.

Serial Experiments Lain is great. Death Note too. Also FLCL, Cowboy Bebop, Elfen Lied.

Grave of the Fireflies is brilliant, and check out Takahata's other masterpiece, Omohide Poro Poro (Only Yesterday is the English title).

You're looking for anything by Hayao Miyazaki (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0594503/). Specifically:
My Neighbor Totoro (definitely the best)
Howl's Moving Castle
Spirited Away
Princess Mononoke
Porco Rosso
and, if you can handle the ridiculousness, Pom Poko

Word.

EDIT: Cowboy Bebob is amazing. Highly recommended.

"wolverine and the x-men" is pretty nice(a bit political, but very badass), also for fun "drawn together" and "daria" is pretty awsome if you like their humor that is.

Miyazaki for sure! Also Satoshi Kon's films are all very good. Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, Paprika. I liked his series Paranoia Agent, too.

Paranoia Agent was awesome. Even though it is kind of morbid, I thought the episode with the people trying to kill themselves was hilarious.

Ghost in the shell: Stand Alone Complex

Both seasons, specially 2nd Gig, present heavy political and social themes. Its mixture with cybernetics and artificial intelligence background make it an even more sublime anime.

That's my favorite episode. It wanders off the main storyline, but it is brilliant and funny.

I see you trolling.

As far as I know the only Marxist-leninists followers of the Albanian line who are fans of japanese animation are Red Pill and Red_Struggle,and some other banned member, considering this, your attempt to vilify us with an association of somekind of nerd-like steriotype is ridiculous.

I haven't seen a lot of series lately. I'll get around to Evangelion Shin Gekijouban one of these days. I really like the Hellsing Ultimate episodes that have been released so far. Highschool of the Dead was excellent.
