hey all,
since i'm getting back into making theater again i want to expand my catalogue of instrumental (i.e. without any vocals what so ever) music that i can incorperate in my work.
please give me some tips to download, i don't mind if it is dance, rock, classical, industrial etc as long as its completely free of vocals....
here are some of my personal favs:
dutch heroes "kong"
zEbMNVVFLEg
the belgium surf band "50 feet combo"
GQBvpfu55xs
dutch minimal composer simeon ten holt's "canto ostinato"
ppluA-_EkQM
"and so i watched you from afar"

Godspeed you! Black Emperor, Explosions in the Sky, Mono, Caspian, Do Make Say Think, Fly Pan Am, Set Fire to Flames, Silver Mt. Zion
These are just a few that come to my immediate recollection, presuming you are into the general concept of post rock these bands make for a pretty decent start. A few of those bands use vocals sparingly, but all of them have a notable amount of instrumental based material, usually more so than not.

I'll post more when I get a chance, but this guy immediately comes to mind:
The only vocal-less song to ever receive widespread banning on American radios due to it "sounding dark and like a fight". One of the most widely-influential-yet-unrecognized-as-such songs ever.

Russian Dance by Tom Waits. He counts off in the middle of it but the rest has no vocals.
Knife Chase by Tom Waits is another good instrumental song but I couldn't find it on youtube.

Boards of Canada have some wonderful electronic tracks with no vocals (they do indeed use vocals on a few tracks, though, but they're more samples than actual traditional lyrics). Here are some to get you started:

Also, you can't go wrong with a little Aphex Twin, almost every track off of "Selected Ambient Works 85-92" is instrumental:

check out 'snowgoons' a hiphop duo that's made an instrumental album with really 'full' sounding songs
Necro made an instrumental album as well, though there are a few spoken samples in there.
And closer to home ;) check out rampbreaks from Seda (osdorp posse) also an instrumental album
and if you know of an hiphop song you like, just type it in on youtube and add instrumental to your search, you might get the beat without vocals..
can't post any links yet but I'll send you a pb on that other forum

I was concerned for a minute that nobody had said Mogwai.
+1 For Boards of Canada.
I was gonna recommend Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky and Godspeed you! Black Emperor, so I will just confirm those ones. I don't really know anything that is similar to them, but I like Walls (it's all without vocals, quite atmospheric, soothing electronic) --
